Expressing frequency (adverbials of time)

Posted on 27. Dec, 2010 by in Grammar, Vocabulary

In this post, I give examples on the use of some adverbials of time that express frequency. These are adverbs that describe how often an action is done, e.g. always, sometimes, often, etc.

Never = أبداً

لا أدخن أبداً.

“I never smoke.”

الأستاذ لا يتأخر عن الدرس أبداً

“The teacher is never late for his class.”

It should be noted that the same adverbial also means “forever”. It can be used in both ways, and the context is the most important clue to disambiguate the sentence, e.g.

“اعمل لدنياك كأنك تعيش أبداً”

“Work for your earthly life as if you live forever.”

Rarely = نادراً

نذهب إلى السينما نادراً.

“We rarely go to the cinema.”

نادراً ما أسافر.

“I rarely travel.”

Sometimes = أحياناً

أحياناً لا يعمل الإنترنت في بيتي.

“Sometimes, my internet connection stops working.”

صديقتي تزوروني أحياناً ولككني لا أزورها أبداً.

“My friend sometimes visits me, but I never visit her.”

Often = غالباً

أسافر بالقطار غالباً لأنني أكره السفر بالطائرة.

“I often travel by train because I hate travelling by air.”

Always = دائماً

أستيقظ دائماً في الساعة السادسة.

“I always wake up at six o’clock.”
