Arabic Prepositions (حروف الجر) are an interesting and a challenging topic for learners of Arabic. When I mark students’ essays, I notice many mistakes with prepositions. In this post, I highlight the meanings and usage of two of the Arabic prepositions; give examples and some exercises on the selected prepositions.

اللام /لـ   means both to and for , e.g.

to, for example

سافرت للسعودية في العام الماضي.

I travelled to Saudi Arabia last year.

for, for example

هذه الكتب لصديقي.

These books are for my friend.

For (used in expression of passion), for example

لي صديقة جديدة من الكويت.

I have a new friend from Kuwait.

الباء /بـ (as) has the meaning of by (by means of)

أفضل الكتابة بالقلم الرصاص.

I prefer to write by pencils.

لا أحب السفر بالقطار.

I don’t like travelling by train.

Complete the sentences below with the appropriate preposition (الباء – اللام)

اشتريت هدية غالية ———–  زوجتي.

الرحلة طويلة ولذلك سنسافر ————- الطائرة.

أريد الذهاب من جدة ———– مكة.

———-عمر أصدقاء كثيرون.

——————— العلم تتقدم الشعوب.

Answers:

اشتريت هدية غالية لزوجتي.

I bought an expensive present for my wife.

الرحلة طويلة ولذلك سنسافر بالطائرة.

The journey is long and therefore we will travel by plane.

أريد الذهاب من جدة لمكة.

I want to go from Jeddah to Mecca.

لعمر أصدقاء كثيرون.

Omar has many friends.

بالعلم تتقدم الشعوب.

Nations progress with knowledge.
