Marhaba (مرحبا)! I hope you found the excerpt from the article I discussed in the previous post interesting and useful. I am confident you have all worked hard to answer the questions. After presenting you with the answers and the translation of some key words, I have added two YouTube videos that portray the work of two Arab filmmakers that were among the few that were honored at the international Birds Eye View Film Festival in London.

The first is the trailer of Eliane Raheb’s recent film called “Sleepless Nights,” which discusses the issues of forgiveness and redemption in Lebanon following the civil war that ripped the country apart. The trailer portrays the issue of displaced individuals during the war. The second is a scene excerpt from a movie by Annemarie Jacir called “When I Saw You” which discusses issues of love, adventure and freedom in the minds and hearts of people in Palestine. The scene excerpt is a song with English subtitles for you to follow and understand the meaning of the lyrics.

It’s an event dedicated to women in film – and this year the Birds Eye View Film Festival in London focuses only on features made by Arab female directors.

2. الكثير من الشابات حاليا يدخلن عالم الانترنت ويرغبن في تشكيل هوية جديدة. هذه المحاولات تصطدم مع التقليديين في البيئة المحيطة بهم، واعتقد انه يخلق توترا جميلا تتناوله المخرجات بالبحث.

Lots of young women are now online and want to form a new global identity. This clashes with many traditionalists around them, and I think this creates a beautiful tension for film-makers to explore.

3. ليس هناك رأي شائع بشأن (المخرجات السينمائيات) فحسب، بل علينا ان نقنع أيضا بنمطية رأي الاعلام الغربي في نظرته للمرأة العربية. لكن هذه الافلام تأتي بما لايتوقعه البعض.

Not only is there stereotyping around ‘the female director’, but we also have to contend with the Western media stereotype of the Arab female. But none of these films deliver what you expect.

The cultural landscape is changing in the Middle East, the Arab Spring gave power to the people and women are challenging oppression, inequality and corruption – and from this, stories are born.

Marhaba (مرحبا)! In this post, I am sharing an important and new article about Arab women film-makers and the obstacles they have surmounted to discuss more social issues like inequality, oppression and corruption. In a nutshell and not to spoil the message behind the article, these courageous Arabic Women Film-makers are gaining the spotlight following a new wave of filming in the Arab World.

I am sharing this article from BBC News Arabic. After presenting you with an excerpt from the article, I have some questions for you to answer. As always, it is an exercise that allows you to reflect on the material you have read.  Also, to provide you with additional hint to stimulate your thinking, I have added a YouTube video that highlights in images and sound why these Arabic Women Film-makers are in the spotlight again. I will give you all some time to work on your answers and then I will post the answers to the questions and the translation of key words in the article.

يركز مهرجان “بيردز اي فيو” Birds Eye View السينمائي المقام في العاصمة البريطانية لندن على إبداعات المرأة العربية في مجال الاخراج السينمائي.

وتقول الهوم شاكيريفار، مخرجة المهرجان، إن السبب في ذلك هو أن اعمالهن الأن متفردة من حيث الحجم والابداع مقارنة بأي مكان آخر.

واضافت “على مدار العام الماضي سافرنا إلى أماكن مثل الدوحة في قطر ودبي وأبو ظبي في الامارات وخالجنا شعور بالغبطة في هذه الاماكن.”

وقالت “هناك موجة جديدة من الإخراج السينمائي في العالم العربي تتصدرها النساء، لكننا ندرك جيدا أن ذلك يدفعنا الى مواجهة مشكلتين.”

واضافت “ليس هناك رأي شائع بشأن (المخرجات السينمائيات) فحسب، بل علينا ان نقنع أيضا بنمطية رأي الاعلام الغربي في نظرته للمرأة العربية. لكن هذه الافلام تأتي بما لايتوقعه البعض.”

افتتح المهرجان بعرض الفيلم البريطاني (عندما أراك) للمخرجة انيماري جاسر، وهي أول مخرجة فلسطينية تبدأ مشوارها الفني في الاخراج السينمائي منذ عام 2007.

كما يضم المهرجان عرض فيلم (ظل إنسان) وهو أول فيلم سينمائي للمخرجة المصرية البريطانية حنان عبد الله، 24 عاما، وهو يتناول أفكار ومعتقدات اربع نساء بشأن قضية المساواة في اعقاب الربيع العربي.

في عام 2012 قال مركز دراسة المرأة في التلفزيون والسينما في كاليفورنيا إن تسعة في المئة من المخرجين في الولايات المتحدة من النساء.

وفي نفس العام لم تنافس أية سيدة على جائزة السعفة الذهبية في مهرجان كان السينمائي.

بالاضافة الى ذلك قال معهد الدوحة السينمائي في قطر، الذي يمول المخرجين المحليين، ان 42 في المئة من المنحة المقدمة منذ عام 2010 كانت منحا لمخرجات، وخلال العام الماضي عرض مهرجان ترابيكا السينمائي في الدوحة مجموعة من الأفلام كان ثلث هذه الاعمال لمخرجات.

وقالت المخرجة السعودية هيفاء المنصور، مخرجة فيلم “وجدة”، “نحن الجزء الشاب في العالم”.

وأضافت “الكثير من الشابات حاليا يدخلن عالم الانترنت ويرغبن في تشكيل هوية جديدة. هذه المحاولات تصطدم مع التقليديين في البيئة المحيطة بهم، واعتقد انه يخلق توترا جميلا تتناوله المخرجات بالبحث.”

وقالت نادين القرش، مقدمة برنامج (الشاشة الكبيرة) على قناة العربية “لم يقف التحامل ضد المرأة حائلا أمام صناعة السينما على النقيض من الكثير من المهن التقليدية في الشرق الاوسط.”

واضافت “المشهد الثقافي يتغير في الشرق الاوسط، كما أتاح الربيع العربي قوة للناس، وللنساء لتحدي القهر وانعدام المساواة والفساد ومن هنا تصاغ القصص. كما شاهدنا ايضا العشرات من المخرجات اللائي يعشن في الخارج يعدن الى بلادهن ويقدمن قصصهن.”

        Today, I am going to tell you about the first fashion school مدرسة للموضة in Egypt. One of our Arabic page fans asked to share its Facebook page and website. The school has a unique project مشروع that was initiated by some Egyptian young women and which I find very interesting. The school’s project is mainly focused on cultural development التطور الثقافى with the purpose of offering media production services  خدمات الانتاج الاعلامى  , developing skills تنمية المهارات and organizing exhibitions تنظيم المعارض  and festivals المهرجانات . They also offer a Fashion Diploma to those who are interested.

      The mission of the school’s project is to “seek the Egyptian roots”. That is why they have given their website and facebook page that name “Gozoor” which is an Arabic word meaning “roots جذور /gozoor/”. They do believe that knowing the roots of any nation is very important because “the starting point in any society مجتمع is to know itself”. The project is directed to help Egyptians to better understand their society and to be well-aware of their heritage التراث and culture الثقافة through digging deep into the roots of what is pure Egyptian and what is not. Better understanding of any society helps its people to be well-aware of its existence وجود which in turn helps them to effectively plan and shape its present الحاضر and future المستقبل . As they put it on their mission; “man should have enough knowledge معرفة of his homeland’s history تاريخ as well as identity الهوية and heritage.” The project can also be of great interest to non-Egyptians who are interested in studying or learning about the Egyptian fashion or those who are seeking a certificate شهادة on that topic.

     The project has four main dimensions أبعاد each of which emphasizes the Egyptian identity and promotes the culture of the Egyptian traditional costume. The developers are interested in researching the standards of true Egyptian fashion. They try to reach the taste الذوق of the Egyptian public. They evaluate their taste and way of dress طريقة اللبس .

     The Gozoor website has a very good and friendly and relaxing interface واجهة with more than forty picture background slide-show that takes your breath. The documentary section on the website shows a video that summarizes the transformations التحولات of the Egyptian costumes الأزياء during the past 100 years up till the present time.
