   Ahlan, Arabic lovers! Have you been to Lebanon? What cities did you visit? Have you heard of Tripoli; the Lebanese famous old city? Let’s listen to this news report about the city and what its people are doing to attract more tourists and then try to answer some comprehension questions.

اِســتــمــع إلــى الــتــقــريــر ، ثــُــمَّ أجـِــبْ عـَــن الأســئــلــة الــتــَّــالــِــيــَـــة:

Listen to the report and then answer the following questions:

الأســـْـــئــِـــلــة Questions

ما اسم المدينة التى يتحدث عنها الفيديو؟ و أين تقع؟     

1) What is the city the video is talking about? And where is it located?

هل تعرف أين توجد مدينة عربية أخرى بنفس الاسم؟   

2) Do you know where there is another Arab city with the same name?

بمَ اشتهرت هذه المدينة؟ و ما لقبها؟   

3) What is this city famous for? What is its nickname?

من أين يأتى السياح إلى هذه المدينة؟

4) Where do the tourists to the city come from?

ما الوجبة الأساسية لأهالى المدينة منذ آلاف السنين؟

5) What is the main meal for the people of the city?

لِمَ يهدف “مهرجان تريل”؟

6) What is the purpose of the “Trail Festival”?

ما هى الأهمية التاريخية للمدينة؟

7) What is the historical importance of the city? 

لماذا قــلَّ عدد السياح الأجانب مؤخراً إلى لبنان؟  

8) Why does the number of foreign tourists to Lebanon go down lately?

ما مرادفات الكلمات التالية: الــطــهــى – أزِقــّــة – عــَــبــَــق – دَرْب – عــُــزوف؟  

9) What are the synonyms of these words: الــطــهــىأزِقــّــةعــَــبــَــقدَرْبعــُــزوف?

تــرجــم الــجــمــلــة الــتــالــيــة إلــى الــلــغــة الإنــجــلــيــزيــة:

10) Translate the following sentence into English:

 ” قديماً، استقبلت المدينة الفاتحين من الغرب و الشرق ، و سيتعرف السياح على ثقافة و عادات هذه المدينة المليئة بالحياة فى شوارعها و أزقتها الضيقة التى تحمل عبق التاريخ.”

    Can you explain why in all of the questions (except one) that start with ما the subject follows immediately after the word ما, but in the question ما هى الأهمية التاريخية للمدينة؟ the word ما is followed by هى ? For example, why isn’t it ما هو اسم المدينة ? This kind of question form always troubles me!

      @Andy Ahlan, Andy. You are always welcome. Actually, dropping the pronouns هو/هى is more accurate as long as the subject is there just immediately after the question word. I put the pronoun just as a habit for more clarification of the question. Though the pronouns seem redundant, they explain more and give affirmation to what is meant.
