Question words with prepositions Posted by on May 15, 2015 in Arabic Language, Grammar, Vocabulary

Some Arabic particles join each other when they come together, e.g. when certain prepositions come with question words, they join each other to make one word. They are easy to guess, but hard to identify for new learners of Arabic. I hope you find the following list useful:

عن + ماذا = عمّ

عمّ تتكلم؟

About what?

What are you talking about?

من + ماذا = ممّ

ممّ يتكون هذه الطبق؟

From/of what?

What is this dish made up of?

عن + من = عمّن

عمّن تتكلم؟

About whom?

Who are you talking about?

من + ماذا = ممَّن

ممَّن الهدية؟

From/of whom?

Who is the present from?

في + ما = فيمَ

فيم العجلة؟

Why (for what) is the rush?

ب + ما = بم

بم توصي؟

What do you recommend?

 الى + ما = الامَ

الامَ ترمي؟

What do you intend (aim to)?

على + ما = علامَ

علامَ التعجب؟

Why wonder?
