In Arabic, subjects and verbs have to agree with each other. Recently, many of my students have been making agreement errors with conjugation because they do not notice how the position of the verb and subject affect agreement.

If the verb comes after the subject, it agrees with it in gender and number.

If the verb comes before the subject, it agrees with it in gender, but remains singular.

Consider the following example:

1. أصدقائي تخرجوا من كلية الآداب.

2. تخرج أصدقائي من كلية الآداب.

In the first example the verb comes after the subject, so it agrees with it in gender and number.

In the second example the verb comes before the subject, so it agrees with it in gender, but remains singular.

Consider the following example which illustrates a feminine subject.

1. صديقاتي يخرجن معاً مرة كل أسبوع.

2. تخرج صديقاتي معاً مرة كل أسبوع.

Now, complete the following sentences with the appropriate form of the verb:

1. الأولاد ——— العربية في المدرسة. (درس)

2. ——— رجال الأعمال على شركة طيران الشرق الأوسط. (سافر)

3. ——— أفراد عائلتي أن يجتمعوا كثيراً. (احب)

4. متى سـ ——— السيدات لزيارتنا؟ (جاء)

5. ——— الشباب أن ——— في بيت عائلتهم. (رفض – سكن)

1. الأولاد يدرسون العربية في المدرسة.

2. يسافر رجال الأعمال على شركة طيران الشرق الأوسط.

3. يحب أفراد عائلتي أن يجتمعوا كثيراً.

4. متى سـتجيء السيدات لزيارتنا؟
