A new state is being born

Posted on 30. Nov, 2012 by in Current Affairs, Geography, History, Vocabulary

Today, the UN General Assembly has voted to grant the Palestinians the status of non-member observer state  (دولة مراقب غير عضو).

138 member states voted in favour (لصالح), while 9 voted against (ضد), with 41 nations abstaining (امتنعت).

This is a great day for the Palestinian people, as it is a step forward on the way to having international recognition (الاعتراف الدولي ) of the Palestinian state (دولة فلسطينية) .

Although Israel and the US have strongly opposed (عارض) the move, and described it as a step backward for the peace process (عملية السلام)!

I believe this is a great historic decision that can make a big difference for the region by improving the prospects of peace and ending the historic injustice done to the Palestinian people! It would be really great to have two states (Israeli and Palestinain) living together in peace! We are probably one step closer to this today than we were yesterday, and it is very exciting!

It is such a memorable day! Today (Sunday, 24th June 2012) and at a bit after midday, The Elections High Committee الـلــجــنـــة الــعــُــلــيــــا لـلانــتــخـــابــــات announced the final figures and results of the Egyptian runoff elections. The committee declared Dr Muhammad Morsi مــُــحــَــمــّــد مــُــرســى as President of Egypt. Thus, Morsi is the first civilian مَــدَنـِــيّ president to the Republic جـُـــمــهــُــوريــّــة of Egypt after the 1952 Revolution. Morsi, who lived most of his life as a member of the oppressed group of the Muslim Brotherhood الإخــْــــوان الــمـُــســلــمــيــــن and was – until today afternoon – the head of its political party; The Freedom and Justice Party حــِــزبُ الــحــُـــرّيـــَّــــــةِ و الــعــَــــدالـــــةِ (FJP), beat his rival مــُــنــَــافــِــس; Dr Ahmad Shafeeq أحــمــد شــفــيــق , who is looked at as an anti-revolution ضــِــدّ الــثـــَــــوْرة figure and one of Mubarak’s regime’s supporters and defenders.

Morsi was born in a small village in the Sharqiyah Governorate on August, 20th 1951. He got his Bachelor Degree in Engineering الــهــَــنــدَســَــــة in 1975 from Cairo University with a grade of Excellent. He got his Master Degree in 1978 and won a grant مـِـــنـــْـــحـــَـــة from Southern California University where he got his PhD. in protecting حــِــمــَـــايـــَـــة  the engines of spaceships in 1982. Morsi came back to Egypt where he taught and headed the Materials عــِــلــم الــمــَــواد Department atZaqazeeqUniversity.

Morsi joined the Muslim Brotherhood in 1979. He worked at its political department since it was established in 1992. He participated in the People’s Council’s elections انــتــخـــابــــات مــجــلــس الــشــعــب in 1995 but succeeded to be a MP only in 2000. He was a very active member of Parliament and was the formal speaker الــمــُــتــَــحــَـــدِّث الــرَّســـْـــمــِـــي of the Muslim Brotherhood’s mass in the Parliament الــبــرلــمــان . He participated with Aziz Sedqi in the foundation تــأســـيـــس of the National Front for Change الجبهة الوطنية للتغيير in 2004 and participated with Dr Muhammad El-Baradei’ in the foundation of the National Association for Change الجمعية الوطنية للتغيير  in 2010. On April 30th 2011, he was elected by the Muslim Brotherhood leaders to be the Chairman of their Freedom and Justice Party (FJP). He joined the presidential rally ســِــبـــَـــاق and won the runoff today.

Morsi was detained by Mubarak’s police more than once. He spent about seven (7) months in prison after he was arrested on may, 18th 2006 after he had participated in public demonstrations that support two judges because of their attitudes against forging تــزويـــر the parliamentary elections of 2005. Morsi was detained again in the morning of January 28th 2011 and during the January 25th Revolution. People Freed Morsi and all other prisoners after the collapse انـــهــــيــــــار of the police forces on January 30th 2011.

Hours after Morsi was named President of Egypt, he resigned from the Muslim Brotherhood and its political party (FJP) as he is now president for all Egyptians. Happiness and joy filled the Tahrir Square as well as all other parts of Egypt.
