       Like today and on June 17th 1998, the great Egyptian Muslim jurist الفقيه and scholar العَالِم Mohammad Mitawlly Al-Shara’awy passed away. He had a widespread popularity that he was nicknamed the “The Preacher of the Century داعية القرن ” and “The Imam of All Preachers إمام الدعاة “. Sha’raawy was so talented in explaining the meanings of the Holy Qur’an. His best gift was shown when he explained, in simple words, the meanings behind the most difficult verses of the Qur’an. He was known as a poet and a lover of the Arabic language. He was also the only non-Saudi to give the Khutbah خطبة (sermon or Islamic speech) at Arafaat during the Hajj الحج(pilgrimage) season.

       Sha’raawy was born in Dakadous village, Mit Ghamr, Ad’daqahliya, Egypt on the April, 5th , 1911. He is a descendant of Ali Bin Abi-Talib. He got married very young and has had two daughters and three sons. Sha’raawy memorized حفظ the whole Qur’an at the age of eleven. His father sent him to Al-Azhar in Cairo to further his education and paid for all his living expenses. In 1937, Sha’raawy joined the faculty of Arabic Language, Al-Azhar University and graduated تخرّج in 1941.

          Sha’raawy got his Master Degree درجة الماجستير  in 1943 and worked as a teacher in Tanta and Alexandria Religious Institutes. In 1950, he was appointed within one of Al-Azhar Missions to teach at the Faculty of Shari’a Law كلية الشريعة , University of Umm Al-Qura أم القرى  in Saudi Arabia. In 1963, he went back to Egypt and in 1966, he traveled to Algeria and remained there for seven years. In 1972, he went back to Saudi Arabia as a visiting professor أستاذ زائر at King Abdel-Aziz Faculty of Shari’a Law in Mecca مَكّة then a President of the Graduate Studies Department. In 1976, he was appointed as a Minister وزير  of Endowments and Al-Azhar Affairs. As a minister, he was the first to issue a ministerial decision to establish the first Islamic bank in Egypt; The Faisal Islamic Bank بنك فيصل الإسلامي . In 1987, he became a member of the Arabic Compound مجمع اللغة العربية  .

        Sheikh Sha’raawy got many prizes and much more respect in Both inside and outside of Egypt. He has so many writings that include:

  • Islam and Contemporary Thought الإسلام و الفكر المعاصر   
  • Islam and Woman, Creed and Path الإسلام و المرأة , عقيدة و منهج
  • Shura and Legislation in Islam الشورى و التشريع في الإسلام  
  • Prayer and the Pillars of Islam الصلاة و أركان الإسلام  
  • The Way to Allah الطريق إلى الله  
  • The Woman as Allah Wanted المرأة كما أرادها الله  
  • The Miracle of the Qur’an معجزة القرآن   
  • Looks in the Qur’an نظرات في القرآن
  • On the Table of the Islamic Thought على مائدة الفكر الإسلامي
  • Fate and Destiny القضاء و القدر  
  • This is Islam هذا هو الإسلام  .
