“To my Love on New Year’s Eve”; Nizar Qabbani Posted by on Dec 31, 2014 in Arabic Language, Culture, Pronunciation, Vocabulary

Ahlan أهــْــلاً and Happy New Year, Arabic lovers! Today, I am presenting a very beautiful love poem by the great Arab poet Nizar Qabbani نــِــزَار قــَــبــَّــانــِــي . The poem is entitled; “To My Love on New Year’s Eve إلـي حـبـيـبـتـي فـي رأس الـسـنـة“. It is a poem of unlimited love, an eternal one that continues from year to year. It is also a thank you poem from the poet to his beloved. I have also posted a youtube video of Saddam Darwish صــدام درويش reciting the whole poem in Arabic so that you can listen to the poem as long as reading it in both Arabic and English. I made the English translation for the poem and I hope you will love it.

To My Love on New Year’s Eve

1

I do move my love to you from a year to a year

Like a pupil moves his homework to a new notebook

I do move your voice .. your smell .. your messages ..

Your phone number .. and your post box ..

And I do hang them in the new year’s safe

And I do grant you a permanent residency ticket in my heart

I love you ..

And I will never leave you all alone on the 31st paper of December

I will carry you on my arm

And I will move with you among the four seasons

In winter, I will put a red woolen hat on your head

In order not to feel cold

And in autumn, I will give you the only raincoat

That I have

In order not to get wet

And in spring,

I will let you sleep on the fresh grass

And have breakfast

With grasshoppers and birds ..

And in summer,

I will buy you a small fishing net ..

To catch oyster ..

Seabirds ..

And the fish with unknown names …

I do love you ..

And I do not want to associate you with the memory of past verbs

Neither with the travelling trains ..

Because you are the last train that travels day and night

On the arteries of my hand

You are my last train ..

And I am your last destination ..

I love you ..

This is the only job I am good at

And my friends and enemies envy me for

Before you .. the sun, the mountains and the woods were

In a state of unemployment ..

And the language was in a state of unemployment

And the birds were in a state of unemployment …

So, thank you for taking me to school ..

And thank you .. because you taught me the alphabet of love ..

And thank you .. because you accepted to be my beloved ..

Thank you
