What Are you Thankful For? Posted by on Nov 26, 2016 in Arabic Language

Marhaba! Millions of Americans around the world celebrated Thanksgiving on Thursday November 24. In the past I have dedicated several posts on Thanksgiving, including the most important words related to this holiday. Apart from lavish dinners and great times with friends and/or family, one important aspect of this holiday is to give thanks.

Though in previous posts, I have argued that it is important give thanks every day and not on one particular day, I think one nice feature of Thanksgiving is to remind ourselves of what we are thankful for. I will share what I am thankful for every day of the year. I have translated and transliterated what I am thankful for.

I am thankful for having a wonderful and caring partner.
Ana shakir li-ajil sharika muhibba wa-ra’i’a.

I am thankful for having awesome friends.
Ana shakir li-ajil asdiqa’ ra’i’in.

I am thankful for having a diverse group of friends.
Ana shakir li-ajil majmu’at asdiqa’ mutanawi’a.

I am thankful for having a loving family.
Ana shakir li-ajil ‘a’ila muhibba.

I am thankful for having good health.
Ana shakir li-ajil suha jayida.

I am thankful for having the ability to apologize.
Ana shakir li-ajil al-qudra ‘ala al-i’tithar.

I am thankful for having a home.
Ana shakir li-an ladaya manzil.

I am thankful for having the sun’s warmth.
Ana shakir li-ajil hararat al-shams

I am thankful for having witnessed beautiful sunsets.
Ana shakir la-ani shahadtu ghurub jamil.

I am thankful for having a job.
Ana shakir li-an ladaya wadhifa.

How about you? What are you thankful for? Friends, family, love etc.?
Wa-matha ‘anka? ma al-lathi anta shakir ‘alayhi? asdiqa’, ‘a’ila, hub…?

Salam everyone! Born as an American to two originally Arab parents, I have been raised and have spent most of my life in Beirut, Lebanon. I have lived my good times and my bad times in Beirut. I was but a young child when I had to learn to share my toys and food with others as we hid from bombs and fighting during the Lebanese Civil War. I feel my connection to Arabic as both a language and culture is severing and so it is with you, my readers and fellow Arabic lovers, and through you that I wish to reestablish this connection by creating one for you.
