Dutch Music: Jan Smit Posted by on May 14, 2010 in Dutch Language

Oh, Jan Smit, I’m not even sure of where to begin writing this particular post, but I’ll give it my best shot!

Jan Smit is a Dutch pop singer who your grandmother and teenage younger sister would both thoroughly approve of.  He sings (mostly) syrupy sweet pop music with catchy get-stuck-in-your-head melodies and simple rhyming lyrics.  He sings a lot about love, being in love, how much he loves someone, partying and being out with the boys drinking. And don’t let me forget, he’s very pretty. He’s another one of these singers who you either love or hate, but regardless of your feelings you will hear him played frequently in cafes and bars.  You just might find yourself humming along too if you’re not careful.

In real life, Jan Smit actually seems to be a genuinely nice person.  And how do we know this? Because he had a reality television series, of course! The entire country got to tune in and watch as drama between his mother and his (perhaps now ex-?) girlfriend unfolded.  I can’t be more specific on the details because I didn’t actually watch the show, but if you’re curious, you can check it out here.

Whether you fall into the “love him” or “hate him” camp, if you’re trying to learn Dutch, listening to these songs is actually helpful. The lyrics are simple, his pronunciation is generally very clear and he enunciates well, all of which are important for those of us trying to make heads or tails of all those strange new sounds.  So take a look at the video below, read along with the lyrics, and don’t be afraid to give singing along a shot.

wil niemand mij zo zien

  1. Eleanor R Clark:

I would love sometime to see a blog on a singer called Yasmine, if that would ever be possible..

  2. Eleanor R Clark:

Actually, I would like to add that although I have never heard Jan Smit before, I defiinitely fall into the “love ‘im” category. I like the catchy tunes, and am getting better at at least following along, I try to sing along, but it is still confusing to my tongue. I have liked all the singers, and have listened to them further on You Tube, as I will Jan, too

      @Eleanor R Clark Hi Eleanor,

Thanks for your comments! I’ll have a look into Yasmine. We’ve also been having a lot of requests for Guus Meeuwis, so stay tuned…

It can be very difficult to sing along, but the helpful thing about a song is you get to try it over and over again. At some point you’ll wrap your tongue around it, I swear.

      Good luck!
