Crossing Paths with a Pigeon Posted by on Mar 3, 2012 in English Language, English Vocabulary

This week I am in the United Kingdom for a small trip. Today I had a meeting in central London and took the opportunity after the meeting to do a bit of shopping and wandering around with a friend. When we were done, we headed back to the station to catch our train back home.

As we walked towards the station entrance, I noticed that there were some pigeons hanging about. If you have ever been in a busy city, then you know that lots of people and birds tend not to go together so well.

Sure enough, as we got closer to the birds and people coming from the other direction also got closer to the birds they took off, smacking me straight in the shoulder with one of their wings.

What other bird parts are there? Here is a chart of the more common words:

Parts of a Bird

beak tail feathers
breast talons eyes
legs claws wings

The bird that I crossed paths with was a pigeon but what other types of birds are there out there? Below is a list of some of the more well known birds. If you don’t know what one of the below birds looks like, why not search for the bird on the internet to get some visuals.

blackbird buzzard canary crow
cuckoo dove duck eagle
falcon finch flamingo flycatcher
goose grouse hawk heron
jay kingfisher magpie nightingale
owl parrot partridge pelican
penguin pheasant pigeon puffin
raven robin seagull sparrow
starling stork swallow swan
swift thrush turkey vulture
woodpecker wren

Questions:

1. Which bird catches mice at night?

2. Which bird is sometimes used for races (and to carry messages)?

3. Which bird is often associated with bringing babies?
