Salut! Comment vas-tu? Posted by on Apr 22, 2013 in Music, Vocabulary

Hello there, c’est encore moi (it’s me again.)

We haven’t spoken since a long time.

By now, we may only be a vague souvenir (memory) to each other.

That’s why I just wanted to say “salut” (“hello”), and ask you: “Comment vas-tu?” (“How are you?”)

Joe Dassin “Salut” (“Hello”) – 1975

His son Julien Dassin sings along with his father, whom he lost more than 30 years ago

Salut, c’est encore moi

Hello, it’s me again

Salut, comment tu vas?

Hello, how are you?

Le temps m’a paru très long

It seemed like a very long time to me

Loin de la maison, j’ai pensé à toi

Far from home, I thought of you

J’ai un peu trop navigué

I’ve traveled around a bit too much

Et je me sens fatigué

And I feel tired

Fais-moi un bon café

Make me a good coffee

J’ai une histoire à te raconter

I have a story to tell you

Il était une fois quelqu’un

There was one time

Quelqu’un que tu connais bien

Someone you know very well

Il est parti très loin

He went very far away

Il s’est perdu

He got lost

Il est revenu

He came back

Salut, c’est encore moi

Hello, it’s me again

Salut, comment tu vas?

How are you?

Le temps m’a paru très long

It seemed like a very long time to me

Loin de la maison, j’ai pensé à toi

Far from home, I thought of you

Tu sais, j’ai beaucoup changé

You know, I changed a lot

Je m’étais fait des idées

I made up some ideas

Sur toi, sur moi, sur nous

About you, about me, about us

Des idées folles, mais j’étais fou

Crazy ideas, but I was crazy

Tu n’as plus rien à me dire

You have nothing to tell me

Je ne suis qu’un souvenir

I am nothing but a memory

Peut-être pas trop mauvais

Maybe not too bad

Jamais plus je ne te dirai:

Never will I ever tell you:

Salut, c’est encore moi

Hello, it’s me again

Salut, comment tu vas?

Hello, how are you?

Le temps m’a paru très long

It seemed like a very long time to me

Loin de la maison, j’ai pensé à toi

Far from home, I thought of you
