Well, these are la Guadeloupe, la Martinique, la Guyane (today’s featured group, “la Compagnie Créole“, hail for the most part from these three), in addition to la Dominique, Saint-Barthélemy, Sainte Lucie, Saint Martin, and, finally Haiti.

We usually have DMCV’s here in the French Blog, but today’s DMCV is the most special of them all. That’s why Jennie and I want to wish UNE TRÈS BONNE ANNEE 2011 À TOUS NOS AMIS ICI (A HAPPY NEW YEAR 2011 TO ALL OUR FRIENDS HERE)!

Everybody knows the Caribbean. But how about the French Caribbean?

What countries are part of it?

You don’t exactly know?

Seriously, what would you do without the French Blog! :)

Well, these are la Guadeloupe, la Martinique, la Guyane (most of “la Compagnie Créole” are from these three), in addition to la Dominique, Saint-Barthélemy, Sainte Lucie, Saint Martin, and, finally—the one that really needs and deserves a bonne année 2011 after this year: Haiti.

To help you “refrench” your memory (Ok, I meant “refresh“—but zis is Ze French Blog after all), here is for you a little aide-mémoire (a French word that designates anything that helps you remember something), or a “reminder” if you will, of the events that made la une des journaux (the headlines of the newspapers.)

-Le gratte-ciel (skyscraper) Burj Khalifa in Dubai sets un nouveau record (a new record): It is the tallest man-made building ever built!

- La Coupe d’Afrique des Nations (The African Cup of Nations 2010) opens on a very sad note: Le bus de l’équipe du Togo de football (the bus of the Togo Football team) is under attack. Deux membres sont tués (Two members are killed), et neuf personnes sont blessées (Nine people are wounded.) The team is forced to withdraw from the competition.

- Also in janvier, another événement tragique hit Haïti, on an even worse scale: Un tremblement de terre (an earthquake) of 7.1 magnitude, followed by a second one a few days later.  Il y a eu environs 220 000 victimes (There has been about 222,000 victims)

- It seems now common to own one or see people walking around with it, but it only made its first appearance at the end of January: It’s la tablette numérique called iPad, personally announced by Apple‘s CEO, Steve Jobs. Le iPad is un mélange between Macintosh and le iPhone.

In février begin les Jeux olympiques d’hiver de 2010 de Vancouver (The 2010 Winter Olympics are held in Vancouverand Whistler, Canada.)
About a month after the Haiti tragedy, it was Chile‘s turn to suffer an incredible 8.8 sur l’échelle de Richter earthquake. L’onde de choc (the shock wave) caused a huge tsunami that traveled through l’océan Pacifique. It was the largest tremblement de terre ever recorded in history.

Mid-April, la planète terre (Planet Earth) seemed still en colère (angry).  All airports across Northern Europe are shut due to the Volcanic ash caused by eruptions from under the Eyjafjallajökull in l’Island (Iceland.) It definitely was the événement majeur for the people who must travel a lot through Europe and beyond!
Try to say “Eyjafjallajökull“: And you thought that some French words were hard to pronounce!
