France 2 – Ukraine 0—Allez les Bleus!

Despite the unbelievably heavy pluies (rains) that flooded the stadium at first, La France has put on a great show and won 2-0 against l’Ukraine, the co-host of the Euro 2012!

We hope les Bleus will achieve another great performance in two days against la Suède.

In the meantime, let’s resume our “Meet the French Squad” tour, starting where we left last time in “Euro 2012: Allez la France!“

Défenseur: Mathieu DEBUCHY:

Yes, his name does sound a bit like Debussy. But unlike the French composer whose birthplace happens to be right outside of Paris, Mathieu was born in le Nord-Pas-de-Calais region, not far from the borders with la Belgique. He has been playing for Lille (the capital of his native region) since more than 8 years now. His first goal with l’équipe de France was scored against Iceland.

Défenseur: Philippe MEXÈS:
After goalkeeper Lloris preferred to play for Lyon, the Italians had to extend to Philippe Mexès an “offer he could not refuse”, Godfather-style.
As a result, he was eager to join the AC Milan. Alas, he may not have been too thrilled when the whole game fixing scandal rocked the Italian football scene.
Like Zidane, Philippe chose to call one of his sons Enzo.
Défenseur: Adil RAMI:
Like many French players who hold a dual-citizenship, Adil was faced with the dilemma of opting either for l’équipe de France or the team of his parents: Morocco. After some hesitation, Adil chose the former, saying to his Moroccan fans that he would “still represent Morocco within the French team.”
Adil knows his buddy Debuchy pretty well, since he made a stint in Lille as well, before signing up with the Spanish team Valencia CF.
Défenseur: Anthony RÉVEILLÈRE:
Anthony Réveillère is the most “seasoned” player of l’équipe de France. Like his teammate Rami, he joined the Spanish squad of Valencia CF, although that was only for a brief period. He subsequently went to sign with Lyon, together with captain “Saint Lloris.“
