Vois, ce spectacle est beau. – Ce paysage immense

Look, this spectacle is beautiful. This landscape is huge

Qui toujours devant nous finit et recommence ;

Which always in front of us ends and starts again

Ces blés, ces eaux, ces prés, ce bois charmant aux yeux ;

This wheat, these waters, these meadows, this wood pleasing to the eye;

Ce chaume où l’on entend rire un groupe joyeux ;

This stubble where one hears laughters of a joyous group;

L’océan qui s’ajoute à la plaine où nous sommes ;

Ocean added to the plain where we are;

Ce golfe, fait par Dieu, puis refait par les hommes,

This gulf, made by God, then remade by men,

Montrant la double main empreinte en ses contours,

Displaying the double hand imprinted in its contours,

Et des amas de rocs sous des monceaux de tours ;

And heaps of rocks under piles of castle towers;

Ces landes, ces forêts, ces crêtes déchirées ;

These moors, these forests, these torn crests

Ces antres à fleur d’eau qui boivent les marées ;

These above water dens drinking tides

Cette montagne, au front de nuages couvert,

This mountain, its front covered by clouds,

Qui dans un de ses plis porte un beau vallon vert,

Which in one of its wrinkles harbors a beautiful green glen,

Comme un enfant des fleurs dans un pan de sa robe ;

Like a child of flowers in a panel of a gown

La ville que la brume à demi nous dérobe,

The city that the mist halfway steals from us

Avec ses mille toits bourdonnants et pressés ;

With its thousand roofs buzzing and pressed;

Ce bruit de pas sans nombre et de rameaux froissés,

These countless step noises and creased branches,

De voix et de chansons qui par moments s’élève ;

Voices and songs which at times are uttered;

Ces lames que la mer amincit sur la grève,

These blades that the sea thins down on the shore,

Où les longs cheveux verts des sombres goëmons

Where the long green hair of dark wracks

Tremblent dans l’eau moirée avec l’ombre des monts ;

Shake in the moiré water with the shadow of the mountains;

Cet oiseau qui voyage et cet oiseau qui joue ;

This bird that travels and this bird that plays;

Ici cette charrue, et là-bas cette proue,

This plow here, and this bow there,

Traçant en même temps chacune leur sillon ;

Each one tracing in the same time its own furrow

Ces arbres et ces mâts, jouets de l’aquilon ;

These trees and these masts, toys of the North Wind;

Et là-bas, par-delà les collines lointaines,

And over there, beyond the faraway hills,

Ces horizons remplis de formes incertaines ;

These horizons full of uncertain forms;

Tout ce que nous voyons, brumeux ou transparent,

All that we see, hazy and transparent,

Flottant dans les clartés, dans les ombres errant,

Floating in clarity, in the erring shadows,

Fuyant, debout, penché, fourmillant, solitaire,

Evasive, standing, leaning, swarming, lonely,

Vagues, rochers, gazons, – regarde, c’est la terre !

Waves, rocks, lawns, -look, it’s the Earth!
