German music and lyrics: Herbert Grönemeyer – Halt mich Posted by on Jul 24, 2012 in Culture, Language, Music

Learning German with music can be great fun, but always be beware of the song you choose. The following song Halt mich (Hold me) by Herbert Grönemeyer is probably not the best song to learn the German language because the lyrics are fairly poetic. But what makes them so poetic? Well, what catches the eye is that Grönemeyer constantly omits important words. For example, in the first stanza he omits the subject ich (I). Although it is not allowed in the German language to leave out the subject at the beginning of a sentence it is nevertheless understandable because, unlike in English, the inflections of the verb reveal that he is talking about himself.

The lines “Dir willenlos ergeben / Find ich Trost bei dir” are also a little bit tricky. I interpret them to belong together and if Grönemeyer would sing these lines in correct German it would be: “Ich bin dir willenlos ergeben, wenn ich Trost bei dir finde” (I’m totally submissive to you when you conmfort me). But Herbert Grönemeyer wasn’t Herbert Grönemeyer when he wouldn’t break the rule of German grammar, hence, he omitted the subject ich again and the conjunction wenn (when). This results in: “Dir willenlos ergeben, find ich Trost bei dir.” (Totally submissive to you, do you comfort me).

But to cut a long story short, here is the song and the lyrics. Enjoy.

Halt mich Hold me
Nehm’ Träume für bare MünzeSchwelge in Phantasien

Hab’ mich in dir gefangen

Weiß nicht wie mir geschieht

Wärm’ mich an deiner Stimme

Leg’ mich zur Ruhe in Deinen Arm

Halt mich

nur ein bißchen

Bis ich schlafen kann

Fühl’ mich bei Dir geborgen

Setz’ mein Herz auf Dich

Will jeden Moment genießen

Dauer: ewiglich

Bei dir ist gut anlehnen

Glück im Überfluss

Dir willenlos ergeben

Find’ ich bei dir Trost

Bin vor Freude außer mir

Will langsam mit Dir untergeh’n

Kopflos – sorglos

Schwerelos in Dir verliern’

Deck mich zu mit Zärtlichkeiten

Nimm mich im Sturm,

Die Nacht ist kurz

Friedvoll – Liebestoll

Überwältigt von Dir

Schön daß es dich gibt

Komm, erzähl’ mir was

Plauder auf mich ein

Ich will mich an Dir satthörn’

Immer mit Dir sein

Betanke mich mit Leben

Laß mich in deinen Arm

Halt mich – Nur ein bißchen

Bis ich schlafen kann

Halt mich – Daß ich schlafen kann

I take dreams at face valueI’m indulging in fantasy

Got caught by you

Don’t know what happens to me

Chafe at your voice

I Lay down to rest in your arms

Hold me

Just a bit

Until I can sleep

I feel secure at your side

Place my heart upon you

Want to enjoy every moment

Duration: eternally

It’s good to lean on you

Happiness in abundance

I’m totally submissive to you

Derive comfort from you

I’m bubbling over with joy

Want to drown slowly with you

Rash – worry-free

Want to get lost weightless in you

Cover me with tenderness

Take me in the storm

The night is short

Halcyon – love-crazed

Overwhelmed by you

Good to have you

Come, tell me something

Chat at me

I’m never tired to listen to you

Want to be with you forever

Fill me up with life

Let me in your arms

Hold me – just a bit

Until I can sleep

Hold me – so that I can sleep
