Ich schaue dir in die Augen, kleines— I am looking into your eyes, kid!!

The art of seduction is something that differs from many cultures and each country has its own customs of courting that special someone, however ones we win the heart of that person, its rather mutual understanding, willingness and making a relationship work, but also appreciating, believing and standing at each others side in life. This is actually where also certain names are used for loved ones, to make them feel wanted, special and cared about, a reminder also in giving each other the strength and support of the many obstacles in life that lies ahead. Love is something that is simply unexplainable

You love the way she laughs and you say: “Ich liebe wie du lachst!” -I love the way you laugh!!!

Have you ever observed your wife, all occupied doing chores and suddenly you find yourself walking up to her you, whispering that one special name in her ear? What would you call her from the given list below? Or when you are worried where your husband might be as he is stuck in traffic, concerned calling him and ask if everything is all right? Only to name each other “Honey” “dear” “ darling” before hanging up the phone? When you say goodbye to each other, what do you say to each other?

But did you know around 70% of all Germans also have pet names for their loved ones?

Germans love to pamper their spouses, but not only with candy or romantic evenings with wine. Germans tend to use names to make a day/evening charming to their sweethearts, that might sound a bit corky at first, with the most popular one: “ Schatz” (Meaning: treasure) or the many variations that derive from this: Schatzi, Schätzchen, Schätzelchen, Schätzlein etc.

So I made a small list of typical Pet names Germans tend to use for loved ones, even some are used for their children….

Can you recognize any of them and which one is your favorite?

To whom would you say this: Ich liebe dich, mein Engel? (I love you my Angel)

And where would this term be most appropriately be used: Ich liebe dich mein Schatz! (I love you my darling!)
