In Greek there are many phrases that can be used to ask for someone’s opinion. Some of these are followed by για, να or ότι. In this post, there are some of the most common phrases and examples of their use. The verbs are put in the second person singular. In a formal context, they should be put in the second person plural: λέτε instead of λες, νoμίζετε instead of νομίζεις, πιστεύετε instead of πιστεύεις. Most of the examples are  translated literally.

1. What do you say about? : Τι λες για;

Τι λες για μια παρτίδα τάβλι ακόμα; What do you say about another round of backgammon? (Meaning: would you like to play another game?)

2.What do you believe?: Τι πιστεύεις για;

Τι πιστεύεις για την απόφασή του να παραιτηθεί; What do you believe about his decision to quit?

3.Do you believe that..: Πιστεύεις ότι…

Πιστεύεις ότι ο θρησκευτικός γάμος πρέπει να είναι υποχρεωτικός; Do you believe that religious marriage should be mandatory?

Πιστεύεις ότι έχει νόημα να μαθαίνω απέξω το λεξιλόγιο; Do you believe there is point in memorizing the vocabulary?

6.Are you in favor of?: Είσαι υπέρ;

It is followed by the genitive case (γενική):

Είσαι υπέρ της θανατικής ποινής; Are you in favor of the death penalty?
