Building vocabulary with mind maps Posted by on Apr 29, 2014 in Vocabulary

There are many techniques used while learning new vocabulary, some of which are cloze activites, memorization, use of flashcards, word dominos, use of the new word in sentences, and the list goes on.
Mind maps can also be an effective technique that  helps  learners face the challenge of “digesting” the new vocabulary by making connections in a non-linear way.
Basically, a mind map is a diagram that is created on the basis of a  main idea, or-in the case of vocabulary-  a keyword, and with the use of colors, shapes, images or graphics, it connects the keyword to other  words or phrases. It can be very sophisticated with graphics and colors, or less detailed,  handwritten or made by the means of an app. The only limit is one’s imagination.
Below, there is an example of a very basic mind map focused on the keyword δωμάτιο (domatio, room). It contains only nouns. It could be enriched by adjectives or verbs, or be part of another diagram based on the keyword πολυκατοικία (poleekateekeea, apartment complex) or κατοικία (kateekia, domicile)

domatio
The keyword is δωμάτιο and it is connected to four groups, some of which are divided in subgroups or separate words:
1. Υπνοδωμάτιο (eepnodomatio, bedroom)

1.1 έπιπλο (epeeplo, furniture)

κρεβάτι (krevatee, bed)

κομοδίνο (komodeeno, nightstand)

παράθυρο (paratheero, window)

1.2 κουρτίνα (kourteena, drape)

2. Σαλόνι (salonee, living room)

2.1  έπιπλο (epeeplo, furniture)

φωτιστικό (foteestiko, lamb)

γραφείο (grafeeo, desk)

βιβλιοθήκη (vivliotheekee, bookshelf)

πολυθρόνα (pollethrona, armchair)

καναπές (kanapes, couch)

2.2 χαλί (hale, carpet)

3. Μπάνιο (banio, bathroom)

λεκάνη (lekanee, toilet)

μπανιέρα (baniera, bathtub)

καθρέφτης (kathreftees, mirror)

πλυντήριο (plintireeo, washing machine)

4. Κουζίνα (kouzeena, kitchen)

ψυγείο (psigeeo, refrigerator)

νεροχύτης (neroheetis, sink)

καρέκλα (karekla, chair)

τραπέζι (trapeze, table)

κουζίνα  (kouzeena, stove)

ντουλάπι (doulapee, cupboard)

The preparation of a mind map can be time- consuming, however it is fun and creative. If you haven’t tried it yet, it’s really worth the effort.
