Γεια σας, τι κάνετε; (Hello, how are you?) Κάνω is one of the first verbs that one learns in Greek. It is also one of the most common ones. Below there is a list of idioms, and colloquial expressions with κάνω and some examples of their use. Its first meaning is “to do” and “to make”.

 

• Τι έκανες;= what have you done?

Τι έκανες; Ντροπή σου!

What have you done? Shame on you!

 

• Κάνω= to pretend

Κάνει την άρρωστη για να μην πάει στο σχολείο.

She is pretending to be sick to skip school.

 

• Δεν κάνει= it’s not right, one shouldn’t.

Δεν κάνει να τρως τόση ζάχαρη.

You shouldn’t eat so much sugar.

 

• Πόσο κάνει; / Πόσο κάνουν;= How much does it cost? / How much do they cost?

Πόσο κάνουν τα μαύρα παπούτσια;

How much do the black shoes cost?

 

• Κάνει ζέστη / κρύο= it’s hot / it’s cold

Σήμερα κάνει ζέστη. Πάμε στη θάλασσα;

It’s hot today. Do you want to go to the beach?

 

• Κάνω ησυχία= to be quiet

Κάντε ησυχία, διαβάζω!

Be quiet, I’m studying!

 

• Κάνω + φαγητό / ποτό= to make, to cook + food / drink

Η Μαρία κάνει καλό καφέ.

Maria makes good coffee.

 

• Κάνω λάθος= to make a mistake

Νόμιζα ότι μπορούσα να τον εμπιστευτώ αλλά έκανα λάθος.

I thought I could trust him but I made a mistake.

 

• Κάνω μάθημα (αγγλικά, χορό, πιάνο κλπ)= to go to a class, to learn (English, dance, piano etc)

Ο Πέτρος κάνει αγγλικά και βιολί.

Petros learns English and violin.

 

• Κάνω παρέα= to be friends

“Ξέρεις τη Στέλλα;” “Ναι, κάναμε παρέα στο πανεπιστήμιο.”

“Do you know Stella?” “Yes, we were friends in college.”

 

• Κάνω πάρτι= to have a party

Ο Γρηγόρης κάνει πάρτι το Σάββατο. Σε κάλεσε;

Grigoris is having a party on Saturday. Did he invite you?

 

• Κάνω πλάκα= to be kidding

Πλάκα μου κάνεις;

Are you kidding me?

 

• Κάνω τα στραβά μάτια= turn a blind eye. This is a “mainstream” expression (στραβά μάτια means blind eyes). There are also many colloquialisms which mean the same thing: κάνω την πάπια (literally, to pretend to be a duck), κάνω τον Κινέζο (to pretend to be a Chinese man), κάνω το κορόιδο (to pretend to be a fool).

Ο Γιάννης αντέγραφε τις απαντήσεις μου αλλά η καθηγήτρια έκανε τα στραβά μάτια.

Yannis was copying my answer sheet but the teacher turned a blind eye.

 

• Κάνω υπομονή= to be patient.

Κάνε υπομονή! Σε ένα τέταρτο θα είμαστε στο σπίτι.

Be patient! We will be home in fifteen minutes.

 

• Τα κάνω πλακάκια= to be in cahoots. (Πλακάκια means tiles).

Τα έκανε πλακάκια με την εταιρία για να πάρει μεγαλύτερη προμήθεια.

He was in cahoots with the company in order to get a higher fee.

 

• Τα κάνω σαλάτα, τα κάνω θάλασσα= to go pear-shaped (σαλάτα means salad, and θάλασσα means sea)

Τα έκανε σαλάτα με την εργασία της και τώρα πρέπει να την ξανακάνει.

Her paper went pear-shaped and now she has to do it again.

 

• Την κάνω= to blow, to go slang)
