The winter has finally come to Greece. In this post there is a list of words suitable for beginners with examples of their use. Advanced students can check this post from 2015. Καλό χειμώνα!

 

Ουσιαστικά (nouns)

η ζέστη: heat

Το καλοκαίρι κάνει ζέστη. It’s hot in the summer.

ο ήλιος: sun

Πάμε στο πάρκο;  Έχει ήλιο σήμερα. Do you want to go to the park? It’s sunny today.

ο καύσωνας: heatwave

Έχει 42 βαθμούς. Έχει καύσωνα. It’s 42 degrees. There is a heatwave

η συννεφιά: cloudy (το σύννεφο= cloud)

Σήμερα έχει συννεφιά. Λες να βρέξει; It’s cloudy today. Do you think it will rain?

το κρύο: cold

Στην Ελλάδα κάνει κρύο τον Δεκέμβριο. In Greece it’s cold in December

η βροχή: rain

Η βροχή ποτίζει τα φυτά. The rain waters the plants.

το χιόνι: snow

Το χιόνι πέφτει αργά. The snow is falling slowly.

ο πάγος: ice

Δεν μου αρέσει να περπατάω στον πάγο.I don’t like walking on ice.

το χαλάζι: hail

Το χαλάζι κάνει κακό στα φυτά. Hail damages the plants.

ο αέρας, ο άνεμος: wind

Δεν πάμε για μπάνιο σήμερα. Έχει πολύ αέρα. We won’t go swimming today. It’s too windy (lit: there is a lot of wind).

το δελτίο καιρού: weather forecast

Βλέπουμε το δελτίο καιρού στην τηλεόραση. We watch the weather forecast on TV.

 

Ρήματα (verbs)

ψιχαλίζει: it drizzles

Όταν ψιχαλίζει δεν παίρνω ομπρέλα. When it drizzles I don’t take an umbrella.

βρέχει: it rains

Τα παιδιά δεν θα πάνε στην παιδική χαρά γιατί βρέχει.

The children will not go to the playground because it is raining.

χιονίζει: it snows

Όταν χιονίζει φοράω σκούφο. When it snows I wear a cap.

φυσάει: it is windy (the wind is blowing)

Σήμερα φυσάει αλλά δεν κάνει κρύο. Ο αέρας είναι ζεστός. Today it’s windy but it’s not cold. The air is hot.

 

 

Ρωτάμε για τον καιρό (asking about the weather)

Τι καιρό κάνει;: What is the weather like?

Τι καιρό κάνει στην Θεσσαλονίκη; What is the weather like in Salonica?

Κάνει πολύ κρύο. It is very cold.

Πόσους βαθμούς έχει;: How many degrees are there? (lit. translated)

Πόσους βαθμούς έχει τώρα στην Αθήνα; How many degrees are currently in Athens?

Έχει δύο βαθμούς. There are two degrees.

Τι θερμοκρασία έχει;: What is the temperature?

Τι θερμοκρασία έχει στο σπίτι σου; What is the temperature in your house?

Έχει είκοσι βαθμούς. It is twenty degrees.
