The verbs “to learn” and “to study” are often misused even by advanced learners of Greek. In this post, there are some examples of their use. There’s also a list of words related to school.

διαβάζω (diavazo): to read / to study

Ο Μιχάλης διαβάζει την εφημερίδα του. (O Mihalis diavazei tin efimerida tou). Michael is reading his newspaper.

Πρέπει να διαβάσω ιστορία για το τεστ. (Prepei na diavaso istoria gia to test). I have to study history for the test.

το διάβασμα (to diavasma): reading / homework

Έχω πολύ διάβασμα για αύριο. (Eho poli diavasma gia avrio). I have a lot of homework for tomorrow.

μαθαίνω (mathaino): to learn

Η Αλίκη μαθαίνει ισπανικά. (Ee Aliki mathaini ispanika). Alice is learning Spanish.

το μάθημα (to mathima): class/lesson/course/subject

Το μάθημα τελείωσε. Θα τα πούμε την επόμενη εβδομάδα. (To mathima teleiose. Tha ta poume tin epomeni evdomada). The class is over. We’ll talk next week.

“Τι μάθημα έχετε τώρα;” “Χημεία.” (Ti mathima ehete tora? Himia). What is lesson (subject) do you have now?” “Chemistry.”

μελετάω (meletao): to study

Μελετάμε πέντε ώρες τη μέρα. (meletame pende ores ti mera.) We study five hours per day.

η μελέτη (ee meleti): study / research

Έχουμε πολλή μελέτη για το τεστ. (Ehoume poli meleth gia to test). We have to study a lot for the test (lit: we have a lot of study for the test).

Ο καθηγητής δημοσίευσε μια μελέτη για τη χοληστερόλη. (O kathigitis dimosiefse mia meleti gia ti holisteroli). The professor published a study about cholosterol.

σπουδάζω: to study in University.

Ο Άκης σπουδάζει βιολογία στο Πανεπιστήμιο. ( O Akis spoudazei sto panepistimio). Akis studies biology in University.

οι σπουδές (ee spoudes): studies

Όταν τέλειωσε τις σπουδές της βρήκε δουλειά σε ένα γραφείο. (Otan teleiose tis spoudes tis vrike douleia se ena grafeio). When she finished her studies she found a job in an office.

Words related to school

η τάξη (ee taxi): class, classroom, grade

Η τάξη μας έχει δεκαπέντε παιδιά. (Ee taxi mas ehei dekapende paidia). There are fifteen children in our class.

Ο δάσκαλος της πέμπτης τάξης είναι πολύ καλός. (O daskalos tis pemptis taxis einai poli kalos). The teacher of the fifth grade is very good (lit.).

το σχολείο (to sholeio): primary and secondary school. If you use it to mean college or university people will be confused.

Ο γιος της είναι τεσσάρων χρονών. Δεν πάει στο σχολείο ακόμα. (O gios tis einai tesaron hronon. Den paei sholeio akoma). Her son is four years old. He doesn’t go to school yet.

ο παιδικός σταθμός (o paidikos stathmos): daycare

Η Νίνα είναι τριών χρονών. Πηγαίνει στον παιδικό σταθμό κάθε μέρα. (Ee Nina einai trion hronon. Pigainei ston paidiko stathmo kathe mera).Nina is three years old. She goes to daycare every day.

το νηπιαγωγείο (to nipiagogeio): kindergarten

Η Αναστασία είναι νηπιαγωγός. Δουλεύει σε ένα ιδιωτικό νηπιαγωγείο. (Ee Anastasia einai nipiagogos. Doulevei se ena idiotiko nipiagogeio). Anastasia is a kindergarten teacher. She works in a private kindergarten.

το δημοτικό (to dimotiko): elementary school

Το δημοτικό έχει έξι τάξεις. (To dimotiko ehei exi taxies). There are six grades in elementary school.

το γυμνάσιο (to gymnasio): middle school (age 12-14)

Η Έλλη είναι δεκατριών χρονών. Πηγαίνει στο γυμνάσιο. (Ee Ellie einai dekatrion hronon. Pigainei sto gimnasio). Ellie is thirteen years old. She goes to high school.

το λύκειο (to likio): high school (age 15-18)

Ο γιος τους πηγαίνει σε ένα νυχτερινό λύκειο. (O gios tous pigainei se ena nihterino likeio). Their son goes to an evening high school.

το δημόσιο σχολείο (to dimosio sholeio): public school

Το δημόσιο σχολείο της γειτονιάς μας είναι πολύ καλό. (To dimosio sholeio tis yitonias mas einai poli kalo). The public school in our neighborhood is good.

το ιδιωτικό σχολείο (to idiotiko sholeio): private school

Τα παιδιά τους πηγαίνουν σε ένα ακριβό ιδιωτικό σχολείο. (Ta paidia tous pigainoun se ena akrivo idiotiko sholeio). Their children go to an expensive private school.

το πανεπιστήμιο (to panepistimio): university

Τελείωσε το πανεπιστήμιο στην Αθήνα και μετά συνέχισε τις σπουδές της στη Γαλλία. (Teleiose to panepistimio stin Athina kai meta sinehise tis spoudes tis sti Galia). She graduated from the university of Athens and then she continued her studies in France.

η τεχνική σχολή (ee tehniki sholi): technical school

Ο Παύλος τελείωσε μια τεχνική σχολή και έγινε υδραυλικός. (O Pavlos teleiose mia tehniki sholi kai egine idravlikos). Pavlos finished a technical school and became a plumber.

το πτυχίο (to ptihio): bachelor’s degree

Η Ειρήνη έχει πτυχίο Νομικής. (Ee irini ehei ptihio nomikis). Irene has a bachelor in Law.

το δίπλωμα (to diploma): diploma. In Greece, the graduates of a Polytechnic School get a diploma.

Η Αλεξία έχει δίπλωμα Αρχιτεκτονικής. (Ee Alexia ehei diploma arhitektonikis). Alexia has a diploma in Architecture.

το μεταπτυχιακό (to metaptihiako): master’s degree

Ο Στέλιος έχει μεταπτυχιακό στην Ειδική Αγωγή. (O stelios ehei metaptihiako stin eidiki agogi). Stelios has a master’s degree in Special Education.

το διδακτορικό (to didaktoriko): PhD

Όταν πήρε το δίπλωμά της, έκανε διδακτορικό στη βιοκλιματική. (Otan pire to diploma tis ekane didaktoriko sti vioklimatiki).

When she got her diploma, she had a PhD in bioclimatic.

ο δάσκαλος, η δασκάλα (o daskalos, ee daskala): teacher in primary education (masculine and feminine). Η Σοφία δουλεύει σε ένα δημοτικό σχολείο. Είναι δασκάλα. (Ee Sophia doulevei se ena dimotiko sholeio. Einai daskala). Sophia works in an elementary school She’s a teacher.

ο μαθητής, η μαθήτρια (o mathitis, ee mathitria): student in primary education (masculine and feminine). Ο Κωνσταντίνος είναι μαθητής του δημοτικού σχολείου. (O Konstantinos einai mathitis tou dimotikou sholeiou). Konstantinos is a student in primary school.

ο καθηγητής, η καθηγήτρια (o kathigitis, ee kathigitria): teacher in secondary education / professor

Η Μαρία δουλεύει σε ένα γυνάσιο. Είναι καθηγήτρια ιστορίας. (Ee Maria doulevei se ena gimnasio. Einai kathigitria istorias). Maria works in a middle schoo. She’s a history teacher.

Ο Κυριάκος είναι καθηγητής στην Ιατρική. (O Kiriakos einai kathigitis stin iatriki). Kiriakos is a professor in Medical School.

    do you have a booklet or cd or anything with: starting to learn greek, like hello, how are you, where do you live?
    that kind of thing, the starters guide to greek, and also in phonetical issue
