Common Urdu Words in Hindi Posted by on Dec 18, 2012 in Hindi Language

Hindi language is full of loan words and you would be amazed to see, many words that we use in our daily conversation have foreign origins. In this post, I will show you some of the most frequently used Urdu words in Hindi.

Urdu language in itself has origin in Hindi. It has derived its grammar from Hindi which has been derived from the Sanskrit, however, unlike Hindi the derived words are not from Sanskrit language but many other languages such as Arabic, Persian, and Turkish etc. Interesting thing is that many of the Hindi speakers unknowingly use or hear them daily and will claim that the words are of native origin rather than foreign. Words which seem unmistakably indigenous or derived from Sanskrit like चाय (Chai – Tea), सितार (Sitar), हिंदी (Hindi), जवाहर (Javaahar – Gem) and दोस्त (Dost – Friend) etc. are all loan words from other foreign languages!

Some of the most important Urdu words which are used in Hindi are:

I hope you will take it constructively.
    1.
निडर (fearless) is not a synonym for बहादुर (brave) and both words are used in Hindi.
    2.
किनारा is the common word in Hindi : not साहिल ! You may be thinking of Hindi film songs where this word -and several more Persian / Urdu words would be preferred to किनारा and other Hindi words. Not in the conversational Hindi. The same with सपना (much more common in conversations)and ख़्वाब (common in songs).
    3.
    यार has a very different connotation from मित्र / दोस्त.
    4.
ईमान (integrity / honesty) and गरिमा (dignity / decorum) are two very different words and one is not used in place of the other.
    5.
The same with कानून (law)and नियम (rule). Both are common in Hindi.
    6.
The same with किस्सा (anecdote) and घटना (incident) !
    7.
    It’s लज्जा, not लिज्जा.

  6. Vishnu:

Actually, all the “Urdu Words” you mentioned are actually either Persian or Arabic. For example Gunah is Persian and Waqt is Arabic.

    • Nitin Kumar:

@Vishnu @Vishnu: Because Urdu derives its vocabulary from Sanskrit, Arabic, Persian, Turkish and Pusto.

  7. Pallav Arora:

    Dear Friend,
I have doubt about origin of Urdu. Why Islamic followers in India had to invent a different language Urdu?
sometimes back, I read an article that, Ruler/scholar with pure islamic attitude saw Indian Languages with Malice and disgust, some of the clerics even said that local Indian languages are ruining their Islamic Diction (Persian or arabic) so as to protect our Islamic diction for religious texts and as well as to spread Islam in natives, we need a more robust language which has similarity from both the types of languages.
Hence, Urdu was invented by using a frame structure from sankrit grammar and vocabs loaned from Arab/Persia. this way they could protect their Arabic diction for words.

Now, A question revolved around my mind, whether Urdu is symbol of Islamic forceful oppression and forced conversion in India or It is just an unique language of its origin in Shayari, gazals and other Medieval texts. ( Just keep in mind that some part of southern India where there were Muslim ruler, Urdu was forced as an official language and local people had to learn Urdu in order to get govt. job/official purposes)

  8. nesheza alzaan:

    dear frnd pallav
for your kind information let me clear u that urdu is not at all originated from sanskrit or other language…which u r describing…and secondly let me made it clear that our HOLY QURAN’S translation is in urdu language…
that’s why we consider it an important one to be learnt becoz we have to read QURAN with translation in order to know it deeply…
therefore no question arises of its origin and all.
    i hope u r satisfied with my answer…

    • Nitin Kumar:

      @nesheza alzaan Hello Mr. Alzaan,

Urdu is defintely orignated from Sanskrit, all of the verb that you use in Urdu are from Sanskrit..karna, sona, peena, khelna and so on, every single of them. Then much of the vocabulary too, comes from Sanskrit, kaam, din, raat, mitha and thousands of other words. Clearly, Urdu took its grammar from Sanskrit (and Hindi), took its script from Persian and took vocabulary from Sanskrit, Persian, Turkish, Pasto and Arabic. It is very new language and very non-homogenous. If you are not informed on the linguistic, i suggest you to look for the information on the origin of Urdu rather than what being told by Madrassa.

    Namaste Friends,
I was trying to filter Arabic, Farsi, Turkish words from Hindi in order to purge Hindi from these foreign words. To my surprise I found out that some 70%-80% colloquial Hindi words are based on these three languages. This was a big shocking news to me. I was trying to spread Hindi among my circle to enhance use of Both formal and casual hindi thinking this may revive our language and culture but after knowing the fact that our langauage is too highly contaminated with foreign words what good will it be to promote Hindi.
With a great effort I have prepared a list of farsi, Arabic, Turkish words popular in our language. I request you to post that list in this blog.

  10. Pallav Arora:

  13. rahul:

there is nothing such thing as language purity. Languages are dynamic and rigid structures. In fact the best part of Hindi or Urdu is that they adopt words from any language very easily unlike perhaps English, French or other languages which finds difficult to fit new words.
