Lets me show you an interesting topic of समास (Samaas – Compound) in Hindi. Understanding of them will not only strengthen your comprehension of Hindi texts further but also the creativity of word formation in Hindi.

Compound of Hindi comes into existence when two or more than two mutual words are joined in Hindi.

There are six kind of compounds in Hindi. Lets have a look into each kind with a brief explanation in English and few examples in Hindi.

1. तत्पुरुष समास (Determinative Compound)
There compound is further divided into two types:
a) संज्ञा + संज्ञा ( Noun + Noun )
This is formed by the combination of two nouns.

b) Noun + Verb
This is formed by the combination of a noun and verb.

गगनचुन्भी
गगन को चूमने वाला

 राजपुत्र
राजा का पुत्र

 देशरक्षा
देश की रक्षा
4.
 धनहीन
धन से हीन

2. बहुब्रीहि समास (Attributive Compound)
This is formed by the combination of two nouns or verbs or both and when neither the first word nor the second word is emphasised.

3. द्धन्द्ध समास (Copulative Compound)
This is formed by the combination of two nouns and when both nouns are equally emphasised.

 माता-पिता
माता और पिता
4.
 ऊंच - नीच
 ऊँचा और नीचा

4. अव्ययीभाव समास (Adverbial Compound)
This is formed by the combination of two nouns and when first nouns is emphasised.

पेट भरकर

 रातभर
पूरी रात

 प्रतिवर्ष
प्रत्येक वर्ष

5. कर्मधारय समास (Appositional Compound)
This is formed by the combination of nouns or noun and adjective and analogy is emphasised.

 चरणकमल

6. द्धिगु समास (Numeral Compound)
This is formed by the combination of a numeral adjective and noun.

नवग्रह
नौ ग्रहों का समूह

 चौराहा
चार राहों का समूह
3.
 त्रिफला
तीन फलों का समूह
4.
 त्रिभुवन
तीन भवनों का समूह
