Examples of Derivative Roots in Hindi – II Posted by on Apr 22, 2016 in Hindi Language

In Hindi, some of the verbs are derived from other verbs. The root of base verb changes to form a new root.  In the last post, we saw how to derive new verbs root from other verbs. These derived verb is called व्युत्पन्न धातु (Vyautpann Dhaatu – Derivative Root) in Hindi. In this post, let’s take some examples in Hindi.

1. उड़ना (Udnaa – to fly)
मैं आसमान में पक्षी की तरह उड़ना चाहता हूँ। – I want to fly in sky like a bird.

उड़ाना (Udaana- to fly something or someone)
मुझे पतंग उड़ाना पसंद है। – I like to fly kites.

उड़वाना (Udvaana – to make someone fly something or someone by someone (third person))
हम किसी से यह जहाज उड़वाना है।  –  We have to make someone fly this plane.

2. रोना (Rona – to cry)
मुझे रोना पसंद नहीं है। – I don’t like to cry.

रुलाना (Rulana – to make someone cry)
मुझे किसी को रुलाना पसंद नहीं है। – I don’t like to make someone cry.

रुलवाना (Rulvaana – to make someone cry by third person)
किसी को रुलवाना सही नहीं है।  – I have to tell someone to feed you the medicine.

3. कटना (Katna – to cut self)
यह समय कटना चाहिए।  –  This time should pass.

काटना (Kaatna – to cut someone or something)
मुझे अभी सब्ज़ी काटनी है।  – Now, I have to cut vegetable.

कटवाना (Katvaana – to make someone cut someone or something)
तुम्हे किसी को बोल कर यह गास कटवानी है।  – You have to tell someone and get this grass cut.

4. खुलना (Khulna – to open self)
यह दरवाजा खुलना नहीं चाहिए। – This door should not be opened.

खोलना (Kholna – to open)
यह डब्बा खोलना। – This tin needs to be opened.

खुलवाना (Khulvaana – to make someone open something)
तुम्हे कल राकेश को बोल कर दुकान खुलवानी है। – You have to tell Rakesh to open the shop tomorrow.

5. मरना (Marna – to die)
हम सबको एक दिन मरना है।  – We all have to die one day.

मारना (Maarna – to kill or beat someone or something)
क्या तुम्हे लोगों को मारना अच्छा लगता है?- Do you like to beat other people?

मरवाना (Marvaana – to make someone kill or beat someone)
क्या तुम्हे पता है, रमेश ने किसी से रोहित को मरवा दिया।  – Do you know that Ramesh has got Rohit killed?
