Test on Idioms and Proverbs Posted by on Jun 19, 2012 in Hindi Language

We have covered some posts on idioms and proverbs in Hindi. I hope, you still remembers because today, I would like to test your Hindi skills on this topic.

I have made two test sections (A and B) to test your usage of idioms and proverbs, and ability to differentiate between the two.

A: Below, you will find some of the idioms and proverbs. You have to make a sentence from each of them. Meanings as well as romanized spellings are provided.

Idioms

1. आँखें चुराना (Aankhein Churana) – to avoid someone

2. साँस लेना (Sans lena) – to feel relieved

3. मुँह मीठा करना (Muh mitha karna) – to share happiness (on good news)

4. चहरा उतरना (Chehra utarna) – to be disappointed

5. दन्तो तले उंगली दबाना (danto tale ungali dabaana) – to be awe-stack

Proverbs

1. अंधा क्या चाहे दो आँखें (Aandha kya chahe do aankhein) – A wish coming true

2. आँख का अंधा नाम नयनसुख (Aankh ka aandha naam nayanshukh) – Being opposite of someone’s name meaning.

3. कहा राजा भोज कहा गंगू तेली (Kaha raja bhoj aur kaha gangu teli) – Big difference in the status or class

4. खिसयानी बिल्ली खम्बा नोचे (Kisyani billi khamba noche) – to show anger after getting embarrassed

5. चोरी का मॉल मोरी में (Chori ka maal mori mein) – Money earned the wrong way will be taken away, would be lost

B: Below, you will find the idioms and proverbs are mixed. You have to identify which one is an idiom and which one is proverb. Meanings as well as romanized spellings are provided.

1. आम के आम गुडलियों के दाम (Aam ke aam gudhaliyon ke dam) – Double benefit

2. अंग-अंग ढीला होना (Ang – Ang dhila hona) – to be very tired

3. अंगूठा दिखना (Angutha dikhna)  – to betray

4. उल्टा चोर कोतवाल को डांटे (Ulta chor kotwal ko dante) – the guilty scolding the innocent

5. कहीं धूप कही छाया (Kahi dhup kahi chaya) – strange variation

6. अगर – मगर करना (Agar – Magar karna) – to make excuse, to procrastinate

7ऊंट के मुँह में जीरा (Undh ke munh mein jeera) – insufficient as per the size

8. आँखों से गिरना (Aankho se girna) – to be ashamed to someone

9. ऊँची दुकान फीका पकवान (Unchi dukan phika pakwan) – only superficial good

10. आँखों में खटकना (Aankho mein khatakna) – to find something or someone unpleasant
