Just like in English or any other language, there are confusing words in Hindi. Confusing words are two or more words which are very close in spelling or pronunciation which have different meanings.

I have made a short list of top confusing words in Hindi. The pronunciation (Romanized Hindi) as well as their meaning in English is given.

अपेक्षा (Apeksha – Expectation)
उपेक्षा (Upeksha – Neglect)

दिन (Din – Day)
दीन (Dīn – State)

अंदर (Andar – Inside)
अंतर (Antar – Difference)

आभास (Aabhaas – Inkling)
आवास (Aavaas – Housing, Habitat)

आकर (Aakar – Mine)
आकार (Aakaar – Shape)

कल (Kal – Tomorrow/Yesterday)
काल (Kaal – Time, Death)

अवधि (Avadhi – Duration)
अवधी (Avadhī – A Language)

आदि (Aadi – Etc)
आदी (Aadī – Habitual)

ओर (ōr – Toward)
और (Aur – And)

चिर (Chir – Ancient)
चीर (Chīr – Cloths)

चरम (Charam – Extreme)
चर्म (Charm – Skin)

गृह (Garh – Home)
ग्रह (Grah – Planet)

ज्वाला (Jvaala – Flame)
जाला (Jaala – Web)

छत्र (Chatr – Umbrella)
छात्र (Chaatr – Student)

दिशा (Disha – Direction)
दशा (Dasha – State)

दवा (Dava – Medicine)
दावा (Daava – Claim)

नियत (Niyat – Appointed, Fixed)
नीयत (Nīyat – Intension)

    I love my mother tongue only in South Africa we don’t get to learn it in schools,,i’m 41 years old and have stared learning again,,so thanks for the info,,,,,Shukar….bohoth bohoth Dhanyavaad,,,,

    Only one mistake I think….
    गृह (garh) does not mean home. I don’t know original meaning of गृह, but know for sure that Home in Hindi means Ghar (घर). Isn’t it?

      @Ahmad H Khan I think you are confused with ग्रह which means planet. घर and गृह are synonyms just like the words home and house in English.

    like in grhah mantralay.

    Here is not any mistake ग्रहmean’s planet .
    And गृह mean’s Home .house etc.

    The correct pronounciation of गृह is griha. Like griha mantralaya गृह मंत्रालय।

    And ofcourse this ग्रह is pronounced as graha only.

    do= two, give.
    Raaz= secret, ruling.
    Maan=accept, respect.
    There are many more.
