A forma -ing não é usada somente para a formação do Present Continuous. Existem várias expressões que pedem o uso da forma -ing em sua estrutura.

1. It’s no use / It’s no good – Não adianta

It’s no use leaving now. The movie must’ve started already. (Não adianta ir agora. O filme já deve ter começado.)
It’s no good trying to persuade him. He won’t listen to us. (Não adiantar tentar convencê-lo. Ele não vai nos dar atenção.)

2. There’s no point in – Não faz sentido

There’s no point in buying a monolingual dictionary if you’re a beginner student of English. (Não faz sentido comprar um dicionário monolíngue se você é um estudante iniciante de inglês.)
There was no point in waiting for her any longer, so we just left. (Não fazia sentido esperá-la mais, então fomos embora.)

What’s the point in doing that all over again? (De que adianta em fazer aquilo novamente?)

3. It’s (not) worth – (não) vale a pena

It’s not worth taking a cab when we can walk there. (Não vale a pena pegar um táxi quando podemos ir lá caminhando.)
Do you think it’s worth buying that overpriced ticket? (Você acha que vale a pena comprar esse ingresso caro?)
That movie is not worth watching. – Não vale a pena assistir aquele filme.

4. can’t help – não poder deixar de

I couldn’t help laughing at his jokes. – Não pude deixar de rir das piadas dele.
I can’t help thinking of her when I hear this song. – Não posso deixar de pensar nela quando ouça esta canção.

5. have difficulty / a hard time / a difficult time/ trouble – ter dificuldade em

I had difficulty studying for the test with so much noise. – Tive dificuldade em estudar para a prova com tanto barulho.
Did you have trouble finding a good hotel? – Você teve dificuldade em achar um bom hotel?

6. It’s a waste of time / money – É um desperdício de tempo / dinheiro

It’s a waste of time coming here earlier because they only open the gates five minutes before the activities. (É uma perda de tempo chegar aqui mais cedo pois eles só abrem os portões cinco minutos antes das atividades.)
