Last week (semana passada) nós nos aprofundamos em termos ligados ao clima e temperatura, veja o post aqui.

Ainda nesta mesma linha, não há nada mais chato do que tentar se expressar e perceber que o vocabulário não vem. Um leitor me mandou uma mensagem dizendo que tentou comentar com um British man (britânico) que “a maré estava baixa” e descobriu que não fazia a menor ideia de como dizer isso. Tendo isto em mente, esta semana vamos falar um pouco mais sobre vocabulário relacionado ao mar, rios e lagos.

A) Fresh water – Água doce

1. River – rio
2. Lake – lago
3. Pond – lagoa
4. Stream – corrente
5. Banks – margem
6. Flow – fluxo
7. Lake shore – margem do rio
8. Waterfall – cachoeira
9. Reservoir – reservatório
10. Dam – barragem/represa

Example: Keith and I camped at the banks of River Bann last weekend. There was no waterfalls close by, and the stream was very rocky. It looked beautiful. – Keith e eu acampamos nas margens do rio Bann semana passada. Não tinha nenhuma cachoeira por perto e a corrente era bastante rochosa. Era lindo.

B) Seawater – Água salgada

1. Ocean – oceano
2. Sea – mar
3. Tide (in/out) – mare (alta/baixa)
4. Foam – espuma
5. Shore, coast – costa
6. Waves – ondas
7. Currents – correntes
8. Cliff – penhasco, falésia
9. Rock – rocha
10. Lighthouse – farol
11. Harbour – porto

Example: The sea is very calm today close to the harbour. There are no waves and the tide is out. – O mar está muito calmo hoje perto do porto. Não tem ondas e a maré está baixa.

C) Useful adjectives

1. Calm – calmo
2. Placid – plácido, tranquilo
3. Stormy – tempestuoso, tormentoso
4. Unsettled – instável

Example: Yesterday the sea was quite placid, but today it looks very unsettled. – Ontem o mar estava bem plácido, mas hoje parece muito instável.

1. D) Useful vocabulary
2. Bog – brejo
3. Swamp – pântano
4. Bridge – ponte
5. Landscape – paisagem
6. Island – ilha
7. Peninsula – península
8. Pier – píer

Example: The landscape here is beautiful, from the pier you can see the sun rise over the distant island. – A paisagem aqui é linda, do pier você consegue ver o nascer do sol sobre a ilha distante.

Exercise – Agora para testar o que você aprendeu, escolha a palavra em parênteses que faz mais sentido para completar o texto a seguir:

My friend Catharine and I went on a hike last Saturday. I live on the (cost/flow), so when I woke up and looked outside the window, the sea looked (dam/unsettled), there were big (foam/waves) and the tide was in. The waves had formed some (foam/rock) on the shore. Because it was a clear day, you could see the (lighthouse/bog) at a distance.

Cathy wanted a change of (stormy/landscape), so we decided to drive towards the mountains. We parked the car close to a (river/unsettled), and walked around the river’s (harbour/banks) until we found a (bridge/currents). We crossed it over the fast (waves/flow) and started going up the mountain.

When we got to the top of the mountain, we could see a (lake/tide) on the other side and a little (landscape/island) in the middle where there was a small abandoned cabin. Because it was getting late, we made plans to go back some other time and try to cross to the island so we can check out the scary cabin.
