Um idiom em inglês é uma expressão ou frase usada com frequência em determinada língua, e que pode ter um sentido literal ou figurativo (atenção, idiom é um falso amigo e não quer dizer idioma, e sim expressão idiomática!). Para ter um bom domínio de uma língua estrangeira, é sempre importante conhecer essas expressões e incorporá-las em sua fala. Então hoje damos início a série Idioms, começando com frases relacionadas à palavras back.

Literalmente, back é um advérbio que significa costas, de volta, atrás, entre outros. Muitas dessas expressões estão ligadas a esse sentido. Let’s take a look?

Back to square one/ back at square one – to go back to square one is to start doing something again from the beginning (começar de novo).

  • I spent all morning fixing my computer, but it broke down again. Now I’m back to square one! (Passei a manhã toda consertando meu computador, mas ele estragou de novo. Agora vou ter que começar tudo outra vez!)
  • Rachel got completely lost and, after driving for an hour, she was back at square one (Rachel se perdeu completamente e, depois de passar uma hora dirigindo, ela teve que começar do zero)

Behind someone’s backif someone does something behind your back, he/she does it secretely without telling you (fazer algo pelas costas)

  • If you don’t approve what I’m doing, just tell me. Don’t criticize me behind my back (Se você não aprova o que eu faço, me diga. Não me critique pelas costas)
  • Did you know that Haley is seeing someone behind her husband’s back? (Você sabia que a Haley está saindo com alguém e enganando o marido?)
  • Alex’s mom told her not to dye her hair, but she just did it behind her back anyway (A mãe de Alex falou para ela não tingir o cabelo, mas ela acabou fazendo escondido)

Note: “behind someone’s back” é geralmente usado com o verbo go.

Break your backif you are breaking your back, you are working or trying extremely hard (trabalhar duro)

  • I was breaking my back to finish the job on time because the team wasn’t helping me (Eu estava trabalhando duro para terminar o trabalho porque a equipe não estava me ajudando)
  • Why should Claire break her back organizing the party by herself if she can just hire someone to help? (Por que a Claire está trabalhando tão duro organizando a festa sozinha se ela pode simplesmente contratar alguém para ajudar?)

By the back door – to do something by the back door is to act in a dishonest or secretive way, to hide the truth, clandestine, illegal (agir às escondidas, secretamente, clandestinamente)

  • My dad says traffic fines are just a way for the goverment to collect extra money by the back door (Meu pai diz que multas de trânsito são apenas uma maneira do governo arrecadar dinheiro ilegalmente)
  • My neighbor got his job at city hall by the back door (Meu vizinho conseguiu o emprego dele na prefeitura clandestinamente)

Be on [someone’s] backif somone is on your back, they keep criticizing or telling you what to do, in a irritating way (pressionar, pegar no pé, implicar)

  • My boss is always on my back, telling me do work faster (Meu chefe está sempre pegando no meu pé, pedindo para eu trabalhar mais depressa)
  • Dad is on my sister’s back about my grades all week (Papai está pressionando minha irmã a semana inteira por causa de minhas notas)

Get off [someone’s] backyou say get off my back as a rude or informal way to tell someone to stop criticizing you, annoying or telling you what to do (deixar em paz, parar de encher o saco)

  • I wish my supervisor would get off my back. I’m doing the best I can! (Queria que meu supervisor me deixasse em paz. Estou fazendo o que posso)
  • Get off my back, dad. I’ll do my homework later! (Não encha o saco, pai. Vou fazer minhas tarefas depois)
