Hello everybody! Let’s talk politics? Vamos falar de política?

This month (esse mês), os norte-americanos elected (elegeram) seu novo president, o controverso bilionário Donald Trump. O que vocês acharam dos results (resultados)? Em quem vocês teriam voted (votado)?

Ficou interessado em participar do debate? Então today (hoje) vamos ver vocabulário relacionado às presidential elections.

Aqui estão algumas key-words (palavras-chave) e seus meanings (significados):

  • win (ganhar) x lose (perder)

Trump has won the elections. Hillary lost.

  • to back (apoiar) – to show support to a candidate
  • ballot box (urna)- a box to put votes in
  • a ballot (cédula) – the piece of paper to write your vote on
  • to campaign (fazer campanha) – to promote a candidate with the objective of getting him/her elected
  • candidate – a person who competes to be elected
  • to cast a ballot (depositar a cédula)- to put the ballot in the ballot box
  • debate – a regulated formal discussion about a certain topic
  • democracy (democracia) – a system of goverment (governo) based in the equality between people
  • to elect (eleger)- to select a candidate for the position
  • an election (eleição)- the process of selecting a candidate
  • to run for president (candidatar-se)- to enter the election as a candidate
  • to vote – to express an opinion
  • political party (partido político) – a group of people with the same political convictions
  • politician (político)- a person who has a political career
  • politics (política)- activities of the government (governo)
  • absentee ballot (justificativa)- a paper ballot used by voters who are not present on election day

Now here are some examples:

  • The two major political parties in the US are the Democrats and the Republicans (Os dois principais partidos políticos nos EUA são os Democratas e os Republicanos)
  • A party’s official candidate has to raise money and gather support from party members (O candidato oficial de um partido deve arrecadar dinheiro e obter apoio de outros membros do partido)
  • A president is elected for a four-year term of office (O presidente é eleito para um mandato de quatro anos)
  • Citizens go to a voting center and cast their ballot for the candidate of their choice (Os cidadãos devem ir a um centro de votação e depositar seu voto para o candidato de sua escolha)
  • Even though women have run for president in the U.S., not one has been elected yet (Embora mulheres tenham se candidatado à presidência nos EUA, nenhuma foi eleita ainda)
  • Presidential candidates are going to debate health care and public safety issues on TV next week (Os candidatos à presidência irão debater questões de plano de saúde e segurança pública na TV semana que vem)

  • Bernie Sanders is a member of the Democratic Party (Bernie Sanders é um membro do partido democrata)
  • Channels like Fox, NBC and others organize debates for all candidates (Canais como a Fox, NBC e outros organizam debates para todos os candidatos)
  • Trump supporters are excited about his victory (Os apoiadores de Trump estão empolgados com sua vitória)
  • A candidate who wins must deliver a victory speech (Um candidato que vence deve dar um discurso de vitória)
  • In 2017, Donald Trump will become the 45th US president (Em 2016, Trump será o 45º presidente norte-americano)

    First of All I don’t think Donald Trump is a controversial he’s a patriot!

    The media lied a lot about him, he’s not a corrupt!

    Hillary in other hand is a corrupt confirmed by more than six thousands emails!

    She wanted to increase the taxes and open the borders to everyone even who hate America!

    Yesterday a Slam shooter appears in a University of Ohio! Wake up!
