I have given a lot of thought to the “sound like a native speaker” concept when speaking another language, so I decided to look for materials and resources to share with you guys here on the blog.

I came across this very cool video by teacher Rachel where she uses the Ben Franklin technique to improve pronunciation and I really think it’s worth a try!

Como vocês sabem eu sou fascinado pela parte de pronúncia e um aspecto que sempre me chamou a atenção foi a diferença na pronúncia e no sotaque entre o inglês americano e o inglês britânico.

Fui pesquisar para escrever sobre o assunto e até mesmo gravar um áudio e acabei descobrindo este vídeo super interessante do canal Rachel’s English. Nesse vídeo a professora americana Rachel se junta com a professora inglesa Minoo, do canal AngloLink e falam sobre os diferentes sons de vogal.

Preste atenção na posição da boca das professoras ao pronunciar as palavras e tente imitá-las, caso você goste de inglês americano ou britânico. Recomendo que você se inscreva nesses dois canais do Youtube para melhorar ainda mais seu inglês.

Há duas pronúncias distintas para a palavra CERTIFICATE em inglês.

O verbo TO CERTIFICATE (certificar) se pronuncia /cer ti fi KEI t/, ou seja, a terminação ―ATE é pronunciada como ―EIGHT. A última sílaba do substantivo CERTIFICATE (certificado, diploma) é pronunciada como a palavra ―KIT. Além disso, neste caso, a segunda sílaba passa a ser a tônica: /cer TIF i kit/.

A área de pronúncia me fascina e estou sempre procurando novos materiais e referência para compartilhar com vocês. Sempre dou uma olhada no canal do Youtube da professora Rachel, pois gosto muito dos vídeos dela. E procurando eu descobri um vídeo super interessante sobre como a preposição at é pronunciada em relaxed speech.

A preposição at /æt/ é pronunciada de maneira reduzida quando estamos numa conversa normal em inglês. A professora Rachel fez um vídeo especial para mostrar como isso acontece.

Teacher Melanie’s channel on Youtube has amazing videos so I decided to check out for some more pronunciation videos and I found this really interesting one about commonly mispronounced words in English. The words are: said, suit, clothes, recipe, mountain, famous, and virus.

I’ve been reading a book. “A Whole New Mind – Why right-brainers will rule the future”, by Daniel H. Pink and in one of its chapters it describes that lengthy and oftentime fruitless brainstorm sessions that we have all been part of at work.

Pink says that effective brainstorming sessions aren’t random and haphazard because they follow a particular structure that’s proven to elicit good ideas. These rules are taken from Tom Kelley’s excellent book, The Ten Faces of Innovation:

1. Go for Quantity. Good ideas emerge from lots of ideas. Set a numerical goal – say, a total of one hundred ideas.
2. Encourage Wild Ideas. Extremism is a virtue. The right idea often flows from what initiallyy seems outlandish.
3. Be Visual. Pictures unlock creativity.
4. Defer Judgement. There’s no such thing as a bad idea, so banish the naysayers. Think creatively first and critically later.
5. One Conversation at a Time. Listen, be polite, and build on other’s suggestions.

A good idea is to have someone serve as a scribe and another as facilitator. At the end of a half-hour, you’ll have a long list of ideas. Take a break. Then begin evaluating what’s on the list. Most of the ideas won’t be very good. Some will be downright ridiculous. But it’s almost certain that you’ll come up with a handful of ideas you’d never have arrived at otherwise.

Vocabulary

lengthy = long
random = happening or chosen without any definite plan, aim, or pattern
haphazard = done in a way that does not seem to be carefully planned or organized
to elicit = to make someone react in the way that you want; to manage to get information from someone
outlandish = extremely strange and unusual
to defer = to arrange for something to happen at a later time than you had planned
naysayer = someone who always opposes, denies or look at the negative side of an idea
scribe = someone who takes notes
downright = completely
to come up with = to think of something (ideas, plans, etc.)
a handful of = some, a couple of
otherwise = in any other ways

O som /ʌ/ é muito comum em inglês e nesse vídeo da Teacher Melanie vamos praticar 60 palavras com ele. O som /ʌ/ ocorre no início de uma palavra ou no meio de uma stressed syllable.
