Il Congiuntivo Presente – An Exercise Posted by on May 10, 2017 in Grammar

Here’s an exercise to help you practice the use of the Italian present subjunctive. You can revise the conjugation of the present subjunctive in these two recent posts: Italian Present Subjunctive and Present Subjunctive of Irregular Verbs.

At the end of each of these Italian sentences we’ve given the infinitive of the verb that needs to be conjugated in the present subjunctive.

1. after verbs that express hopes, needs, wishes, beliefs, worries, thoughts:

let’s hope that the train will arrive on time
speriamo che il treno ___ in orario (arrivare)

do you think that Julia would like to stay for dinner?
pensi che Giulia ___ rimanere a cena? (volere)

I’m afraid that there aren’t enough chairs for everybody
ho paura che non ci ___ abbastanza sedie per tutti (essere)

I need you to go and buy some bread
ho bisogno che tu ___ a comprare un po’ di pane (andare)

2. to give polite orders with the Lei form:

put the bag on the chair
___ la borsa sulla sedia (appoggiare)

tell Rossi to call me back in an hour
___ a Rossi di richiamarmi fra un’ora (dire)

don’t worry, I’ll do it
non __ ____, ci penso io (preoccuparsi)

leave it there, I’ll put it away
___ pure lì, lo metto via io (lasciare)

3. after impersonal forms built with the conjunction che:

it’s better if you (plural) wait for the rain to stop
è meglio che ___ che ___ di piovere (aspettare, smettere)

Giulia needs to be at the airport by eight o’clock
bisogna che Giulia ___ all’aeroporto per le otto (essere)

it’s a pity that you have to leave early
è un peccato che tu ___ andare via presto (dovere)

4. following conjunctions built with che:

we’ve changed the timetable so that everybody can participate
abbiamo cambiato l’orario affinché tutti ___ partecipare (potere)

let’s hide before mother realizes that we’ve broken the vase
nascondiamoci prima che la mamma __ ___ che abbiamo rotto il vaso (accorgersi)

I’ll call you only if they change the programme
ti telefono solo nel caso che ___ il programma (cambiare)

    Mi piacciono molto questi esercizi sulla grammatica italiana perché mi fanno “rivisitare” le regole della lingua. Infatto l’italiano è una lingua abbastanza difficile. No?
