L’Elemento Umano Posted by on Apr 9, 2012 in Italian Language

We’ve made you work hard with our recent blogs, so I think it’s time for a change of strategy. I’ve always found that one the the most effective ways to absorb la lingua italiana is by listening to music. Here’s a lesson in the use of the si impersonale (see this blog: Si Impersonale  -Part 1) from the great Jovanotti. In this song the si impersonale is probably best translated as ‘you’ with the meaning of ‘one’

 L’Elemento Umano di Jovanotti

The Human Element by Jovanotti

you win, you lose
you step in shit that gets stuck in the cracks of your sole
you live, you die
you feel a pain from which there is never a thought that comforts you
you speak with dogs, you shake hands
you often pretend to be something
you watch the sunset, you arrive late
rubble of exploded life rains down on us
you have children, you dream dreams
you make sandcastles on the tideline
you thread pearls of glass on necklaces and plan an escape

noi siamo l’elemento umano nella macchina
e siamo liberi sotto alle nuvole

we are the human element in the machine
and we’re free beneath the clouds (repeat 3 times)

noi siamo l’elemento umano nella macchina
e ci facciamo del male per abitudine

we are the human element in the machine
and we hurt ourselves out of habit

you look for work, you accumulate stress
which then explodes in a sudden change of scene
you search for something
that makes two swallow’s wings grow from your back
you accuse others, you skip meals
you go down to take out the trash
you smooth out wrinkles, you thresh the corn
you come to terms with the thousand faces of fear
you’re born in a place, you take a boat to somewhere in order to be born again
you put flowers between the pages of a diary to remember a moment of true life

noi siamo l’elemento umano nella macchina
e siamo liberi sotto alle nuvole

we are the human element in the machine
and we’re free beneath the clouds (repeat 3 times)

you make plans, you shake hands
you sign agreements that involve a penalty
you spit on the ground, you lose the war
you think that in the end it’s all the same
you move the castle, you cover the bishop
you spend a day defending what’s lost
you enter your password, you get on the network and for a bit you imagine everything is different
you study a system, you present a problem
you try to finish quickly to have spare time
you discover that you’ve got an immense power that’s never enough

noi siamo l’elemento umano nella macchina
e siamo liberi sotto alle nuvole

we are the human element in the machine
and we’re free beneath the clouds (repeat 3 times)

noi siamo l’elemento umano nella macchina
e ci facciamo del male per abitudine

we are the human element in the machine
and we hurt ourselves out of habit

  1. Michele Mandrioli:

It should say “lose” in the first line of the English translation, not “loose”. “Loose” is an adjective; the opposite of “tight”. The same spelling error occurs in the last verse.
Also, “swallows” is a possessive and should have an apostrophe in it: “swallow’s”.

  2. William Auge:

    a presto, Bill

  3. Gil Lanzarotti:

If line two was cleaned up, this would be a much much nicer song. D’accordo?

    • Geoff:

  5. sue:

    oops — ci diamo.

    • Geoff:

@sue …actually it should be ‘per tutto quello che Geoff e Serena ci danno’.

But good try, and thanks for your lovely comment.

      Saluti da Geoff e Serena

  6. Cinzia:

    • Serena:

@Laura Edwards Salve Laura! Tanti auguri per la tua classe. Dove insegni?
      Saluti da Serena
