The Foundlings – Nina’s Story Posted by on May 19, 2017 in Uncategorized

Here’s my translation of Serena’s recent article I Trovatelli – La Storia Di Nina:

Nina is a very sweet cat with beautiful eyes. Like all our cats, she’s a village stray who has contributed a lot to the survival of her species. Now that she’s no longer young (we think she’s about 7 or 8 years old) the time has arrived for her to retire, and so she came to stay in Geoff and Serena’s rest home.

Ecco la Frankengatta appena tornata a casa nostra. Here’s the Frankencat when she’d just got home again.

Ma andiamo per gradi …
But let’s take it step by step …

As I’ve already said, Nina is a local cat that we’ve seen around the village for many years, always hungry, and accompanied each spring by at least one kitten. She has medium length black and white fur and two beautiful amber coloured eyes.

A couple of months ago we noticed that one of her ears was all scratched and often bleeding. Remembering the painful sight we had witnessed during our early days in the village, when there were a couple of cats with diseased and untreated ears, we decided to catch Nina and treat her.

Catching her was easier than expected, not only because she was hungry and therefore very happy to be given cat biscuits and milk, but also because she’s not afraid of cuddles, quite the opposite! As soon as we picked her up, we noticed that she was as light as a feather, you could feel all her ribs, and she was covered in ticks.

Nina due settimane fa. Nina two weeks ago.

After a couple of weeks of treatment she showed no sign of improvement, apart from the fact that you couldn’t feel her ribs any more, so we took her to the vet. The verdict was cruel and unexpected: tumours on both ears! There was no choice but to have her operated on, and while we were at it we had her sterilized as well, all included in the price!

When we went to pick her up after the operation we had a shock! She was very scared, with her head shaven, no ears, stitches sticking out of the stumps, without whiskers, and with her tummy and front legs shaven. What’s more the vet confessed to us that he’d made a mistake and had overheated the electric scalpel, burning her left ear and her nose, which is why he’d had to cut her whiskers off.

Tornata a casa, i primi giorni Nina era tutta disorientata.
Poor Nina, she looked more like the feline version of Frankenstein than a cat! When he saw her, Geoff commented: “How come, we brought you a cat and you’ve given us back a chihuahua!”, and he nicknamed her “The Modified Cat”. Back home again Nina was completely disorientated for the first few days. Without her ears and whiskers she no longer had any sense of distance, so she was always banging her head everywhere.

Nina oggi. Nina today.

After over a month of treatment and several check-ups, Nina has now made a full recovery: her whiskers are growing back, as is the fur on her head and legs, her ears are healed, although they obviously won’t grow back, and she’s put a bit of weight on. She’s also learned to use the litter tray, but she often has problems “hitting the target”! She’s fitting in perfectly with the rest of the family, and sometimes plays with Amber and Mr.Black, and in the evening she watches films lying on Geoff’s lap.

  1. paolo minotto:

    Ciao Serena e Geoff,

    “i padiglioni auricolari”

    • Geoff:

@paolo minotto Le orecchie are the ears in general whilst i padiglioni auriculari are the bits that stick out like a parabola to catch sounds. I don’t think we differentiate in English, perhaps there’s a technical term, but I’ve don’t know it.

      A presto, Geoff 🙂
