Common Japanese expressions for the morning routine Posted by on Nov 6, 2014 in Culture, Grammar

So, another morning, either you are ready to start your day or not, it is here. Let’s learn some of the Japanese expressions that you often use during the morning hours today. It sure depends on your activity, but here are some of the expressions that you might want to know. Read on.

おはよう。おはようございます。(Ohayo , Ohayo gozaimasu) ~ Good morning.

If you are saying, good morning to your family member, you can just say, “おはよう”. This is a very casual way of saying good morning. If you are saying good morning to your neighbor, you might want to say, “おはようございます”, which is much more polite way of saying good morning.

朝ごはん、何食べる?あさごはん なに たべる?(Asa gohan nani taberu?)~What do you want to eat for breakfast?

After waking up, the first thing is to eat breakfast, I hope, for most people. This is often my question to kids in the morning because they are so picky eaters!

~が食べたい。~がたべたい。(~ga tabetai )~I want to eat ~.

To let someone know what you want to eat, you can use this expression. I want to eat ~.

Kudamono ga tabetai. (くだものが たべたい。)~I want to eat some fruits.

Shiriaru ga tabetai. (シリアルが たべたい。)~I want to eat cereal.

Omuretsu ga tabetai. (オムレツが たべたい。)~I want to eat omelette.

Be-kon ga tabetai. (ベーコンが たべたい。)~I want to eat some bacon.

何飲む?なにのむ?何飲みたい?なにのみたい?(nani nomu?, nani nomitai?)~What do you want to drink?

This might be another common question mom or dad might be asking to kids or between wife and husband. Note that: 何飲む?is much more casual way of asking, “what do you want to drink?”  You can answer this question by saying:

~が飲みたい、~がほしい。(~ga nomitai. ~ga hoshii) ~ I want to drink ~, I want ~.

Miruku ga nomitai. (ミルクが のみたい。) ~I want to drink milk.

Miruku ga hoshii. (ミルクが ほしい)~ I want milk.

Orenji ju-su ga nomitai.(オレンジジュースが のみたい) ~ I want to drink orange juice.

Orenji ju-su ga hoshii (オレンジジュースが ほしい) ~ I want orange juice.

いただきます。(itadaki masu) & ごちそうさまでした。(gochiso samadeshita)

These two words are very important in Japanese culture at the meal time. Before you start eating, you say, いただきます and when you are finished eating, you say, ごちそうさまでした. It is just an etiquette to say these words. Itadaki masu simply means, ” Thanks for the food. I start eating now.) Gochiso samadeshita simply means, (Thanks for the food. I am done eating.)

いってきます (Ittekimasu) & いってらっしゃい (Itte rasshai)

If you are leaving to work or to school, as you leave the house, you will say “Ittekimasu”. If you are the one staying home,  you will say “Itte rasshai”  to the person who is leaving.

These are the common Japanese words to say in the morning. Which one are you already using every morning? Perhaps your common expression might not be listed here. Let me know which ones you use most often!
