Related to my previous post about “Japanese words for morning routine“,  this post is all about the Japanese words for your bed time routine. When you get ready to go to sleep at night, these are the typical things you might do at home. Below, I have collected some words related to your typical bed time routine and added Japanese vocabulary for each of them.  Try using some of these Japanese vocabulary, starting tonight when you go to bed. The more you practice,  the more you would feel comfortable using new vocabulary. Enjoy!

 

Dinner – yu-shoku – 夕食、ゆうしょく

Finish dinner – yu-shoku o oeru – 夕食を終える、ゆうしょくをおえる

Night – yoru – 夜、よる

Sleepy – nemutai – 眠たい、ねむたい

Feel sleepy – nemutaku kanjiru – 眠たく感じる、ねむたくかんじる

Shower – shawa- シャワー、しゃわー

Take shower – shawa- o abiru – シャワーを浴びる、しゃわーをあびる

Hair – kami – 髪、かみ

To dry hair – kami o kawakasu – 髪を乾かす、かみをかわかす

Pajama – pajama – パジャマ、ぱじゃま

Change to pajama – Pajama ni kigaeru – パジャマに着替える、ぱじゃまにきがえる

Teeth – ha – 歯, は

To brush teeth – ha o migaku –  歯を磨く、はをみがく

Bed – beddo – ベッド、べっど

Bed room – shinshitsu – 寝室、しんしつ

Book – hon – 本、ほん

Read a book – hon o yomu – 本を読む、ほんをよむ

Lamp – ranpu – ランプ、らんぷ

Lights – denki – 電気、でんき

Turn off lights -denki o kesu – 電気を消す、でんきをけす

Good night – oyasumi – お休み、おやすみ

Blanket – mo-fu – 毛布、もうふ

Comforter – futon – 布団、ふとん

Pillow – makura – 枕、まくら

Sleep – neru – 寝る、ねる

Dream – yume – 夢、ゆめ

To dream – yume o miru – 夢を見る、ゆめをみる

Alarm clock – mezamashi dokei – 目覚まし時計、めざましどけい

Set alarm clock – mezamashi dokei o setto suru – 目覚まし時計をセットする、めざましどけいをせっとする

Story – ohanashi – お話し、おはなし

To tell a story – ohanashi o suru – お話をする、おはなしをする

Long story – nagai hanashi – 長い話、ながいはなし

Short story – mijikai hanashi – 短い話、みじかいはなし

Go to sleep – nemurini tsuku – 眠りにつく、ねむりにつく

Deep sleep – fukai nemuri – 深い眠り、ふかいねむり

 

You might have already been familiar with some of the above vocabulary. If there were some that you were not familiar with, write them down and try using them tonight. It might just take a night or two to get used to using the new vocabulary, and once you memorize them, they are all yours!
