Abbreviation of Korean Indirect Quotation Posted by on Aug 10, 2015 in Uncategorized

From the last five weeks, you have learned Korean indirection quotations which are very important, but hard to memorize. I will go over quickly as your review. So, there are four Korean indirection quotations which are statements (다고, 라고), propose (자고), question (냐고), command (라고), and at the end you should add 말했어요. For instance, 친구가 TV보자고 말했어요/My friend said, “Let watch TV”. Please read my previous blogs if you don’t remember these. Today you will learn abbreviation of the four indirect quotations, please see how they are changed below.

Statements (다고, 라고 말했어요)–                대요/dae yo

Propose (자고 말했어요) –                             재요/Jae yo

Question (냐고 말했어요/물어봤어요) –         냬요/naye yo

Command (라고) –                                          래요/Lae yo

Examples:

Statement: She said it is beautiful/그녀가 예쁘다고 말했어요 – 그녀가 예쁘대요.”

Propose:   She said, “Let’s dig in/ 그녀가 먹자고 말했어요 – 그녀가 먹재요.”

Question: She said, “Is it your shoes?/그녀가 그게 너의 신발이냐고 물어봤어요 – 그녀가 그게 너의 신발이냬요.”

Command: She said, “You should go home/그녀가 너의 집에 가라고 말했어요/ 그녀가 너의 집에 가래요.”
