Korean Web Portals

A good way to make Korean friends and learn Korean is through the web. Here are some of the most popular Korean web portals :

Daum : 다음 (www.daum.net) is a convenient place to read the news in Korean, chat in the forums, and set up an email account to contact people. Daum was one of the first biggest Korean web portals and became popular for its “cafes” (카페) or forums. I personally use Daum to find Korean recipes. Some of the blogs are restricted to friends only, but there are also homepages accessible to the public.

Naver : 네이버 (www.naver.com) Perhaps rivaling Daums’s popularity is Naver. Naver has a very thorough search engine. The results of the search are categorized into blogs, forums, websites, and others. Naver has become so successful an offshoot of it was created specifically for children. It’s called Junior Naver (쥬니어 네이버) with quizzes, games and homework help. The site is rigorously checked for any questionable content not suitable for children.

Nate : 네이트 (www.nate.com) merged with Cyworld (싸이월드) and now users can build friendships through a mini homepage by uploading videos, creating a photo gallery, and set up a personal bulletin board. NateOn (네이트온) is an instant messenger service. Nate has even merged with Empas (엠파스), another web search engine. A lot of Korean celebrities have their personal websites with Cyworld, so if you’re interested in entertainment news, you can go there.

Hangame : 한게임 (www.hangame.com) is a popular game portal. Players can play for free or pay a small fee to play better games. Hangame allows players to interact through multi-player games and online role playing games.
