Learn Korean “From” Posted by on Mar 16, 2015 in Uncategorized

You read and watched how to use “To” last week. Related with that, you will learn “From” in this week. There are a few way to say “From” in Korean: 한테서/han tae seo, 에게서/ae gae, 께/ggae. 한테서 is casual form and you will hear a lot when Korean speak without last syllable “서”. Most of Korean they omit it, so you can be confused when you listening to Korean conversation. Even if it is omitted, there are couple of ways to understand which are context and verb stem. 에게서 is formal and you will see in writing. 께 is honorific form (it is not common to say as meaning of from, so I would not mention about this but you can watch the video below). Please read examples below.

I got a letter from him/ 그분 한테(서) 편지를 받았어요/gu bun han tae seo pyun ji lul bat at eo yo.

I received it from my teacher. 저는 선생님에게서 그것을 받았어요/ jeo nun gu geo seul seon sang nim ae gae seo bat at eo yo.

As you read the examples above, you can guess whether it is to or from by text and verb (get, receive, etc).
