Learn Korean “Verb+는 것”- Nominalization #2 Posted by on Mar 30, 2015 in Uncategorized

Today I am going to talk about the second way to switch from verb to noun. As I said last week, you have to know the way of change from verb to noun because Korean uses verb as a noun a lot. When they change from verb to noun, they remove 다 and then add 는 것 to make noun. For your information: 는 is noun modifier and 것 is thing, meaning of 는 것 is the act of something. Let me give you some examples how to change it. Please see examples below.

To read –읽다 > reading 읽는 것 (Act of reading)

She reads a book/그녀가 책을 읽다. V

She like to read a book/ 그녀는 책 읽는 것을 좋아한다. N

To eat – 먹다 > eating 먹는 것(Act of eating)

He eats fruit/ 그가 과일을 먹다. V

He like to eat fruit/ 그는 과일 먹는 것을 좋아한다. N

Korean uses 는 것 as writing most of time. When Korean speak 는 것, they pronounce as 는 거/ nun geo mostly. So, speaking form 먹는 거를 좋아한다.

I understand that there are many rules to learn and it is easy to forget grammar. That is why; you need to keep learning with diverse learning ways such as watching, listening, reading, etc.
