As I mentioned from previous blog, there are four types of Korean indirect quotation which are statement, suggestion, command, and question. Today you will learn how to say the negative form of four indirect quotations. Please read four types of negative form below.

Statement: She said, “I like him”. 그녀가 그를 좋아한다고 했어요 or 그녀가 그를 좋아한대요. In the negative form, 그녀가 그를 안 좋아한다고 했어요 or 그녀가 그를 안 좋아한대요.

Question: She said, “Do you like him?”. 그를 좋아하냐고 했어요 or 그를 좋아하냬요. Negative form: 그를 안 좋아하냐고 했어요 or 그를 안 좋아하냬요.

Above two indirect quotation simply use “안” which means “Not”, but below two indirect quotations use “-지 말자고/말라고 하다/gi mal ja go/la go ha da.”

Suggestion: She said, “Let’s work out.” 그녀가 운동하자고 했어요 or 그녀가 운동하쟤요. Negative form: 그녀가 운동하지 말자고 했어요 or 그녀가 운동하지 말쟤요.

Command: She said, “Dig in!” 그녀가 먹으라고 했어요 or 그녀가 먹으럐요. Negative form: 그녀가 먹지 말라고 했어요 or 그녀가 먹지 말럐요.
