Because life in colors is more beautiful! Jan Brzechwa “Kolory” Posted by on Jun 30, 2016 in Uncategorized

We all knew his poems growing up! Jan Brzechwa, born Jan Wiktor Lesman was a Polish writer of Jewish descent. He is mostly known for his contribution to children’s literature as well as for his translations of Russian literature, translating works by Aleksandr Pushkin, Sergey Yesienin and Vladimir Mayakovskiy. This particular poem was one of my favorites growing up! Why? Because life is better in colors! Enjoy:)

Jan Brzechwa “Kolory”

Malarz wciąż zachodził w głowę:
Są kolory i odcienie,
Każdy inną ma wymowę,
Każdy jakieś ma znaczenie.

Aż podsłuchał raz w farbiarni,
Jak sprzeczały się kolory:
– Żółty trzyma się najmarniej,
Żółty jest na zazdrość chory.

– Też gadanie… Zresztą zgoda,
Mnie zazdrosne lubią żony,
Taka jest w tym roku moda:
Żółty kolor, nie czerwony.

Mruknął czarny: – Czy należy
W takie wdawać się rozmowy?
Jak czerwony się zaperzy,
To się robi fioletowy.

– Zamilcz! Wszystkim się podoba
Modny kolor fioletowy,
A ty jesteś co? Żałoba!
Ciebie lubią tylko wdowy.

– Lepszy czarny jest niż biały!
– Lepszy biały, za to ręczę,
Wszak się na mnie poskładały
Barwy, które tworzą tęczę.

– Tylko panny i oseski
Białym chlubią się kolorem…
– A niebieski
– Co niebieski?
– Jego tu na świadka biorę.

Rzekł niebieski: Słów mi szkoda.
Każdy z czasem wypłowieje.
A zielony tylko dodał:
– Mam nadzieję… Mam nadzieję…

Jan Brzechwa “Colors”

Such was painter’s meditation:
Tones and colors are well-known,
Each has different pronunciation
Each has got some implication.

In a dye-works he once heard
How the colors quarreled badly
– Yellow is the poorest nerd
His jealousy makes him sick

-It’s trash-talking but all right,
Jealous women fond of me,
In a nutshell, this year’s fashion:
Yellow trendy, red not quite

Black has mumbled: Oh my dear
What’s the point of conversation?
When red hits the roof, I prove,
He has purple coloration.

-Quiet! Everybody likes it and in brief,
Color purple is now in.
I will have you know, you’re grief
You are only liked by widows.

-Better color black than white!
-That is not right, better white!
No diggity! Bear in mind this fact:
the base of the rainbow is white.

-Maidens, babies no one else
Can delight in color white…
-Boo…and blue?
-Blue?
– He is my witness that is true.

Blue said humbly: I save my breath
After all, everyone with time will fade
Green hopefully just threw in:
-I hope… I hope…
