transparent portugueseTomar is a very interesting verb to learn because it is used in so many ways. I chose 10 useful expressions with tomar to share with you today.

1. Tomar a iniciativa = to take the initiative

Eu estava esperando ela tomar a iniciativa.
I was waiting for her to take the initiative.

Tome a iniciativa se quiser que as coisas sejam feitas.
Take the initiative if you want to get things done.

2. Tomar a liberdade = to take the liberty

Eles tomaram a liberdade de mudar a data.
They took the liberty of changing the date.

Tomei a liberdade e pedi um drinque para você.
I took the liberty and ordered a drink for you.

3. Tomar banho = to take a bath/shower

Vou tomar banho para relaxar.
I’m going to take a bath to relax.

Vai tomar um banho que o jantar está pronto.
Go take a shower because dinner is ready.

4. Tomar conta de = to take care of

Ela ficava em casa tomando conta do sobrinho de quatro anos.
She stayed home taking care of her four-year-old nephew.

Você pode tomar conta das crianças enquanto eu vou ao supermercado?
Can you take care of the kids while I go to the supermarket?

5. Tomar cuidado = to be careful

Toma cuidado com eles.
Be careful with them.

Tome cuidado ao atravessar a rua.
Be careful when you cross the street.

6. Tomar parte = to take part

Ele veio porque quis tomar parte.
He came because he wanted to take part.

Será que ela tomou parte nisso?
I wonder if she’s taken part in this.

7. Tomar providências = to take measures

Você precisa tomar providências para prevenir isso.
You need to take measures to prevent that.

Ela tem que tomar providências caso isso aconteça.
She needs to take measures in case that happens.

8. Tomar sol = to sunbathe

Passei o dia de ontem tomando sol.
I spend all day yesterday sunbathing.

Vamos tomar um sol hoje?
Wanna go sunbathe today?

9. Tomar uma atitude = to take action

Ainda não tomaram uma atitude.
They haven’t taken any action yet.

A casa é sua! Toma atitude!
The house is yours! Take action!

10. Tomar uma decisão = to make a decision

Eu tive de tomar uma decisão difícil.
I had to make a hard decision.

Foi a decisão mais fácil que eu tive que tomar.
It was the easiest decision I had to make.
