Carioquês – Getting Around Rio Like a Native

The biggest tourist hot spot in Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, has its own slang and almost overall dialect. Living in São Paulo and being around the Paulistanês “language” all the time, to me it’s quite refreshing to go to Rio and listening to Carioquês and its malandro nature.
Cariocas speak with a certain coolness in their accent. They know they’re cool and they make it a point to speak as if they are. They “shhh” their s’s and elongate their vowels, and their r’s are like a raspy English “H” sound. So wanna learn some carioquês for when you finally make that trip down to Rio?

Tudo bom? Adoro seu blog Portugûes. Moro em Ventura, Cali e adoro quase todas as coisas Lusas. Estava morar em Cascais, perto de Lisboa durante o tempo de revolução Portugûes em ’74 onde comecei falar a idioma. Através os anos viajei ao Brasil muitas vezes e conheço Porto Alegre, São Paulo, e Rio.
Gostei seu observações sobre as cariocas. Só gostaria adicionar ‘o sotaque ‘das cariocas e ‘o chiado’ que têm em falar. Rio é mesmo uma cidade maravilhosa não obstante dos perigos. Sou natural de New York City e acostumado à vida cosmopolita. Até foi a Rocinha tomar um cafezinho com o condutor do ônibus.
