Posted on 26. Dec, 2012 by in Sports

We’ve read and watched quite a bit about Brazil’s World Cup and Olympics, but it’s also important to get another perspective. A group of Rio filmmakers are working on a documentary about the preparations for Rio’s mega-events and the changes taking place in the city, particularly in the favelas.

Watch the video below.

Key Vocabulary:

UPP – Unidade de Polícia Pacificadora, or Police Pacification Unit

milícias – paramilitary groups in Rio made up of off-duty and retired police/military/firefighters

comunidade – community, often used to describe a favela neighborhood

cofres públicos – public funds

orçamento – budget

Women and Soccer in Brazil

If you know anything about Brazil, you know that it’s a soccer-crazy nation. But what you may not know is that even though soccer is the national sport, there are very few opportunities for women and girls–even for kids just wanting to play on a team.

There are, of course, outstanding players, like Marta. But there are very few professional opportunities for female soccer players. As the research paper Mulheres e futebol no Brasil: entre sombras e visibilidades describes:

It’s not easy for women to be referees, either.
