There are some rules and words which make sense to native speakers because they have been using those words all their lives without giving them a second thought. However, these rules and words can be confusing to non-native speakers. This is exactly the case for the use of EU, ME, MIM and COMIGO. Let’s see how and when to use them:

1. Eu – it is used when it is the subject of the sentence.

• Eu não vou sair hoje à noite. – I am not going out tonight.
• Se você for eu vou. – If you go I will go.
• Eu falei com o João para terminar o projeto. – I told João to finish the project.

2. Me – it comes before the verb when there is no preposition

• Lorena me falou o que eu queria ouvir. – Lorena told me what I wanted to hear.
• Joana me mandou mensagem ontem. – Joana sent me a text yesterday.
• Nathan me confirmou que vai ajudar o professor. – Nathan confirmed that he would help the teacher.

3. Mim – it comes after the verb and the preposition

• O Gustavo fala sobre mim? – Does Gustavo talk about me?
• Aquela menina não para de olhar para mim. – That girl won’t stop looking at me.
• Mariana não vai à festa sem mim. – Mariana will not go to the party without me.

4. Comigo – com + mim = comigo – it comes after the verb when the preposition is com (with).

• Pedro falou comigo que quer uma festa de aniversário. – Pedro told me he wants a birthday party.
• Thiago vai sair comigo na sexta. – Thiago is going out with me on Friday.
• Luana se casou comigo há 10 anos. – Luana married me 10 years ago.
