Russian where you don’t expect it!

Are you itching to hear the beginning of an old soviet radio news broadcast? Or a few words of Yuri Gagarin? Interspersed with Latin pop music?

Two albums by Spanish musician Manu Chao contain snippets of Russian radio broadcasts worked into his multilingual beats.

I can give you a taste of the Russian in his album Esperanza.

At the end of track “La Primavera” you’ll hear говорит москва … работает все радио станции советского союза, московоское время десять часов, две минуты.

If you get through to the end of this youtube video, you’ll hear it in the last 15 seconds.

At the beginning of the last track on the CD, “Infinita Tristeza,” Yuri Gagarin alternates with some French text. He says, “… люди всех стран и континентов. Через несколько минут, магуческий космический корабль унесёт меня в далекий простор… …. Большое счастье, быть первом в космосе … один на один … не бывало…”

The only version I’ve been able to find of this one on the net is a Barnes and Noble music clip

The first words you’ll hear in this clip are Большое счастье…. To get the whole experience you’ll probably have to listen to the album.

Manu Chao’s first CD, Clandestino also contains hidden Russian. Maybe you can find it.
