All right, we know that hacer means “to do” or “to make”, but this verb has several other meanings that are not so obvious like desempeñar, representar, interpretar, cometer, armar, conseguir, lograr, resolver, efectuar, componer, construir, levantar, formar, cumplir, amasar and acumular.

Check out these sentences and an alternative meaning for the verb hacer.

1. Le gusta hacer el papel de protagonista. (desempeñar, representar, interpretar)
He likes to play the leading role.

2. No sé cuándo aprenderá. Siempre hace los mismos errores. (comete)
I don’t know when he’ll learn. He always makes the same mistakes.

3. Ahí al lado están haciendo mucho jaleo, vamos a ver qué pasa. (armando)
They’re making a lot of noise right next to us, let’s see what’s going on.

4. Ustedes hacen que me ponga de mal humor siempre que estoy contenta. (consiguen, logran)
You manage to get in a bad mood whenever I’m happy.

5. Haz estas cuentas para mí. A mí los números me fastidian. (efectúa)
Do this math for me. Numbers make me nervous.

6. Están haciendo una sinfonía sobre un tema clásico. (componiendo)
They’re composing a symphony on a classic theme.

7. Están haciendo muchas centrales nucleares últimamente. (construyendo, levantando)
A lot of nuclear plants are being built recently.

8. Se están haciendo nubes que amenazan lluvia. (formando)
Clouds are forming that look like it’s going to rain.

9. No haces lo que dices, no se puede confiar en ti. (cumples)
You don’t do what you say, we can’t trust you.

10. Han hecho una fortuna con el alquiler de bicicletas. (amasado, acumulado)
They’ve made a fortune by renting bikes.
